This is the next in the Malden Reads series of thoughtfully selected films in a variety of styles that explore themes of refugees, immigrants, and community.
Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars
(A film by Zach Niles and Banker White)
In contrast to the images of refugees as tragic icons of a war-torn world, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, about a reggae-inflected band born in the camps of West Africa, represents a real-life story of survival and hope. The United Nations asks them to travel to other camps in Guinea to lift people’s spirits. Today they have recorded two CD’s www.refugeeallstars.org) and play their music around the world!
Come to this free screening and have your spirits lifted. Then stay for treats and what we expect will be a very interesting discussion.
Co-sponsored by the Malden Public Library and Malden Reads.
This event is in collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV (www.pbs.org/pov)
