City Clears Overgrowth from Fellsmere Pond in Malden

Find out how the city handled the clean-up effort at Fellsmere Pond in Malden.

The city has spent the past few weeks cleaning up Fellsmere Pond and establishing a maintenance plan moving forward, according to a city press statement.

Mayor Gary Christenson and City Councillor John Matheson have worked on the maintenance planning.

"Due to a particularly hot and dry season, the water level of the pond was down and the overgrowth of weeds had exploded," reads the statement. "An algae treatment was conducted after obtaining proper Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permitting and James Cahill, cemetery director (for the city), was able to remove any surface debris that had accumulated. The results were immediately noticeable."

City staff have largerly focused on cleaning up the pond, but also to the surrounding grounds.

"The Malden DPW stepped up including ROCA workers clearing over 30 large bags of debris," Christenson said. "New trees and plantings have also been installed and the barrels are emptied every day. The hope is to put a maintenance contract  out to bid each spring so that there is regular upkeep of the pond and surrounding area."
