MHSAA Homecoming 2013

            MHSAA Homecoming 2013

Good cheer spread quickly through Malden High’s blue and gold-bedecked cafeteria Saturday as alumni gathered for the MHS Alumni Association’s sixth annual Homecoming luncheon.

Celebrating the school’s rich history of music and the arts, more than 100 graduates from as far back as 1933 – and some faculty members from years past – joined to greet old friends and make new ones.

The Homecoming was “excellent,” said MHS grad Malden Mayor Gary Christenson, who with MHSAA President George Holland, Class of ’55, unveiled and presented to Principal Dana Brown a new photographic portrait of the 1977 grad.

The framed portrait, a gift from the Class of 2013, marks Brown’s tenth year as Malden’s headmaster. Brown was surrounded by members of his family, including his parents, Barbara and Fran Brown, at the unveiling.

Plans are for the new portrait and those of previous headmasters to eventually be put on display in a place of honor outside the Jenkins Auditorium.

“The grads seemed to enjoy themselves,” said MHSAA executive board member and Homecoming chair Patti Kelly, Class of ’80. She said it was a “great event,” and thanked those who helped make it possible.

Among those who shared the spotlight were Marshall Soderblom, Class of ‘33, and Frank Goodwin, Class of ‘43. These “old timers” were of particular interest to dozens of young student volunteers from the MHS Key Club who helped make sure those attending were well supplied with food and drink.

The mayor praised the MHSAA for including the students in the Homecoming, with hopes that in time they, as alumni, will carry on this tradition.
