Malden's Wellness Celebration Kicks Off a Healthy Summer

Malden, Mass. – More than 700 people came to the Malden Wellness Celebration and Bike Rodeo, a collaborative effort planned by the City of Malden, YWCA Malden, Bike to the Sea, Mass in Motion, Massachusetts Safe Routes to School, the Partnership for Community Schools in Malden, and Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA).  The free, family-oriented event was held at the CHA Malden Family Medicine Center at 195 Canal Street on Saturday, June 7.  More than 40 representatives from many of Malden’s health and wellness organizations were on hand to share information about their programs. Attendees enjoyed great food and music along with kung fu, tai chi, and zumba demonstrations, and they received helpful health tips, nutrition education, cancer prevention education, and health screenings.

A big part of the celebration was a bicycle obstacle course set up by Bike to the Sea and Massachusetts Safe Routes for School.  Almost 500 children received free bike helmets, which were generously donated to the YWCA by an anonymous donor.  Attendees also learned bicycle safety and explored the Northern Strand Community Trail, which is adjacent to the Family Medicine Center. Malden Mayor Gary Christenson and several elected city officials attended the event and helped with spin demonstrations on stationary bikes from the YMCA.

CHA also presented the 2014 Community Health Award to a local organization that exemplifies the goal of improving the health of the Malden community. This year’s award went to Bread of Life, an organization that feeds the homeless and disadvantaged and addresses the broader issues of hunger and poverty.
