This past Sunday the Malden High school class of 2011 received their diplomas.

Malden Fire Chief Michael Murphy has closed the Maplewood Fire Station. Firefighters will move to the until-recently vacant Overlook Ridge Fire Station in North Revere. The move was made to protect the health of firefighters currently working out of the 108-year-old Laurel Street station, which has a leaking roof and walls, mold and other problems. The move will mean longer response times to Forestdale and northern parts of Malden, according to fire officials. A box truck wedged itself under the Orange Line bridge near the corner of Medford and Pearl streets Friday morning. Officers at the scene said no one was injured in the accident, though the truck’s top was rolled up like an old sardine can under one of the bridges steel support beams. The bridge has a 12-foot, 8-inch low clearance and is routinely the site of similar accidents as truck drivers have difficulty judging whether their rig can fit under the span.
It was tough day for the Malden High boys lacrosse team on Thursday, as the Golden Tornadoes were blown out by host Wakefield, 19-1. Cruz Desrochers scored Malden's lone goal while goalie Stanley Chen made 18 saves. "Malden never quit," said head coach Brenden Maney, "and even though the score does not indicate the outcome, we played hard. I'm proud of them for that." Malden heads to Salem Friday night for a 7 p.m. game.
If one were to judge simply by winning percentage, the Lynnfield High girls lacrosse team may be one of the greatest in Massachusetts history. The Pioneers played their first ever varsity lacrosse game yesterday, and served Malden High with a 13-2 defeat at Pine Banks Park, giving Lynnfield a perfect 1-0 mark all-time. “We were a little sloppy,” said Lynnfield head coach Ethan Blanchette. “We’re going to have to play a lot better than that the against the Cape Ann League teams ... Students at Triangle, Inc. graduated from a self-defense course on Thursday. The students were part of IMPACT, a self-defense and personal protection course designed for people with disabilities. The rate of physical and sexual abuse involving people with disabilities is shockingly high, making this type of training invaluable for men and women working to lead self-reliant lives.
Malden Catholic finished an impressive 2011 campaign with an overtime victory over St. John's Prep, winning the Super 8 tournament in dramatic fashion.
An Orange Line train between Wellington and Malden Center stations was scorched by a track fire Friday afternoon. The disabled train clogged the northbound tracks, forcing the MBTA to run shuttle service from Wellington to points north. The disabled train was moved and service restored by 4:41 p.m., but not before forcing throngs of commuters off at Wellington station.

Kids swarmed Malden Public Library yesterday to take part in a mid-week dance party. The little ones were led in sessions of the Macarena, Chicken Dance and other line dance classics. There was also puppet shows and other events to help the kids make it through a school vacation week.
Malden's Senior Center is located in a beautiful new building with plenty of space and natural sunlight. Each day, several classes, games, events and passive activities are available for the aging population in town to enjoy.
Malden Public Library's Children Room hosts Preschool Story Time several times throughout the year. Parents and kids follow along stories read out loud, sing songs together, and make crafts.
"Frank Says Hi," the scholarship foundation started in memory of Frank DeCandia, held its annual fundrasier at the Irish-American Club this past weekend. Frank DeCandia was a 22 year old Malden resident who lost a courageous battle with leukemia in 2008. The crowd was feted with music, food, a "Studs" auction and a number of raffles.
