Last month, Malden Reads and the Friends of Oak Grove, Inc. asked Malden students to write a column about someone they know Students could pick a parent, friend, teacher or anyone else who inspires them. The project was a reflection of the official Malden Reds: One City, One Book selection, “The Soloist,” written by news columnist Steve Lopez. The book expended upon a series of columns Lopez wrote about Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless and mentally ill musician living on the streets on Los Angeles. The student columns submitted were all well written, which made choosing the winners especially …
Tsehaye Beyene, who lives in Malden and comes from Ethiopia, is a pastor of a church in Boston. He serves about 200 people. He gives sermons at church and baptizes babies. He also helps people with their problems. He goes to their houses when somebody they love dies or gets sick and he figures out a way to make them as happy as possible. He also blesses their houses with holy water. Even though he does all of this, Mr. Beyene is very humble. “I’m saying the word of God or what God wants me to do or say,” he says. “Even if I say, ‘Bless the house,’ it won’t happen unless God says so.” Mr. …
On March 12, I went to the Burlington Library to interview someone that is a helper, a smart librarian, and most of all, a friend—Ms. Collins. Read on to find out more!   Ms. Collins Ms. Collins worked at the Malden Public Library for about three-and-a-half years. She was the librarian at the Young Adult section at the Malden Public …

Her name is a sweet name that suits her very well. Marilyn. Marilyn Burke is the name. Marilyn Burke is a teacher at the Beebe Malden Public School. All the students call her “Ms. Burke.” Ms. Burke was born in Webster, Mass. She is an Irish/Polish American. She went to Fitchburg State College and Lesley University in Cambridge. Her job as…
In the fifth grade ELL class, which is located in room 336 in Beebe school, Carlos Almeida willingly sat down with me recently and answered all sort of questions to help an audience of a few fifth graders. I immediately found out that Carlos was born in Brazil. Carlos is really a big fan of soccer because all of his childhood was spent playing soccer with his dad, who taught him how to play soccer. Carlos and his dad play soccer outside every weekend, depending on the weather outside. Another of Carlos’ favorite things to do is to hang out with his friends. Carlos is a very friendly guy. If …
I almost forget what is was like when we arrived to America, but listening to my mother’s emotional voice when she answered my questions during the interview, all the scenes started to reappear in my brain like a piece of wood slowly ascending from the deep water. It was in the middle of November when we first arrived to Malden from China. I remember the fierce cold weather and the freezing air that went through my nostrils and sucked into my lungs as my mother described the scene when we stepped out from Logan airport. I could imagine how my mother felt when she saw the empty street and the …
