Mystic Valley Softball Takes Two

The MV Girls softball team ran their season record to 4 - 3 with an impressive 17 - 5 victory over visiting Pope John on Friday morning in Malden. After the game Mystic Valley head coach Scot Barry said: "It is always difficult beating a team twice, especially a team that played us as tough as Pope John did the first time we met. This game truly showed the MV girls desire to win."

Both teams exchanged timely hitting in the first two innings leaving the score 8 - 5 in favor of Mystic Valley. After that, pitcher Leah Thomas and the Mystic Valley defense took over shutting out Pope John over the remaining innings. While this was happening defensively, the offense continued its yearlong display of strength running off 9 runs in the remaining three innings capped off by a game ending 3 - run home run from Jordan Sullivan. Mystic Valley had 15 hits including 4 more for Michelle Doherty, who leads the team with an incredible .750 batting average after 7 games.

Thursday found Mystic Valley travelling to Metheun to take on Presentation of Mary Academy. The visiting Eagles showed their tenacity early on pushing across 10 runs in the first inning all after two outs were recorded by PMA. Michelle Doherty tripled with the bases loaded and three batters later, Sara Marraccino did the same. After some tough luck hitting in the second, the Eagles scored 7 more in the third behind doubles from Marisa Cagno, Jordan Sullivan and Krystiana DiMaro.

The Eagles played solid defense for the rest of the game behind 5 innings of relief pitching from Doherty. Bailey Chiccuarelli had 4 hits in her first varsity start and played solid defense at shortstop.
