Mystic Valley Boys Swimmers Win CAC League Meet, Establish New Personal Bests
The dominant Mystic Valley boys consistently outpaced opponents in the 2013 Commonwealth Athletic Conference championship meet, shedding seconds from previous best times in both individual and relay events.
By swimming a 2:10.75 in the 200 individual medley and a 23.12 in the 50 freestyle, freshman Christian Kinnon became this season’s only swimmer to qualify for Sectionals and States in three events. He had previously qualified in the 100 breaststroke, but dropped three seconds from his seasonal best time at CACs, finishing with a 1:02.53.
Kinnon’s teammates followed suit. Senior Robby DeSantis earned the opportunity to swim the 200 freestyle at Sectionals, finishing with a time of 1:56.52, just five tenths of a second from qualifying for States. Sophomore Nick Antonucci’s time of 1:07.12 was fast enough to qualify him for Sectionals, as well.
Some of Mystic Valley’s younger boys turned in extremely notable performances. Michael Leung broke the 1:00 threshold in the 100 butterfly as an eighth grader, finishing with a time of 59.09. Eighth grader Ryan Kinnon and freshman Kenny Antonucci finished in second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Finally, Sophomore Robbie Cummings won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.84, less than two tenths of a second away from the Sectionals cut.
The Eagles’ relay teams were able to improve their already strong seed times. The 200 medley relay team of Christian Kinnon, Ryan Kinnon, Michael Leung, and Robbie Cummings won the meet’s first event, improving its seasonal best time to 1:50.34. The 200 freestyle relay team—Christian Kinnon, Ben Lieu, Nick Antonucci, and DeSantis—also clocked its best time of the season and won the event. The Mystic Valley boys will compete in both of these events at Sectionals and States.
Eagles reflect on CACs; work toward sectionals and states
At the meet’s conclusion, Mystic Valley boys had earned personal best times in almost 80% of their races.
Based partially on their strong performances at CACs, the Eagles will be well represented at Sectionals and States. Seven of the 10 Mystic Valley boys have qualified, individually or in relays, to compete in state championship meets.
Sectionals will be held on Sunday, February 10 at MIT and States is scheduled for Sunday, February 17 at Harvard.
