The MHS Gymnastics team clinched the Greater Boston League championship by a narrow margin, beating Medford 117.975 - 117.45 on Tuesday, January 25th bringing their record to 5-1.
High scorers for Malden were Noelle Bellmer vault (8.4), bars (7.65), beam (8.025), floor (8.1), Andrew Phu and Kieshawn Rattana vault (7.7), Joel Stevenson bars (7.15), Molly Jaynes bars (7.25), beam (7.25), and Justine Rose floor (7.75). The last time the MHS Gymnastics team won the GBL was in 2001 when Coach Vanessa James was a senior on the team.
On Friday January, 19th the Tornadoes beat Cambridge Rindge & Latin 117-111. High scorers for Malden were Alana Casey vault (8.75), bars (8.15), floor (8.3), Noelle Bellmer vault (8.4), bars (7.9), beam (7.5), floor (8.0), Justine Rose bars (7.2), beam (7.0), floor (7.8), Tai Phan vault (8.0), and Andre Phu vault (7.7).
"We really nailed vault. Everyone had their best vaults of the season. It's very rare in gymnastics to see everyone have their best vaults all on the same day. It was really exciting and I was so proud of them,” said Coach Vanessa James.
“We struggled on beam. We couldn’t count one routine that didn’t have a fall. Kayla Deas also had a really nice performance scoring a 6.8. Overall the team did a fantastic job. Every meet they get out there and do their very best, and it shows.”
