The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School held its annual Admissions Lottery on November 14th. Well over 500 people were in attendance anxiously waiting to see if their child’s number would be called as one of the members of next year’s Kindergarten class.

The school received a record amount of applications to attend Mystic Valley. Over 900 applications were received for grades K-5.  For just the 2013/2014 Kindergarten class, Mystic Valley received over 600 applications, also a record amount, including nearly 300 from Malden alone. With the lottery completed and wait lists updated, Mystic Valley has over 2,600 students on the waiting list to enter grades K through 5 for the 2013/2014 school year. There are currently 1,492 students enrolled at the school in grades K-12.

This just proves the success of Mystic Valley Charter School and the benefit to Malden and the surrounding Community. Let the schools detractors take notice!!!

It also proves a simple business equation from which charter school benefits. They don't have the same expenses as public schools (such as the special education budget) nor do they have multi lingual education the way cities in our area do. Charter schools take puclic education dollars from the city budget through an unfair per pupil cost when the chatrter school costs are nowhere near the same as our 100% inclisive puclic education. This is nothing more than a for profit business which makes money at the expense of the taxpayers and public education. Has anyone wondered how this business has been able to buy up so much property in Malden. Remember that nice Chevrolet dealership property that was located on Rte. 60. That was a prime location for a new business coming into Malden or perhaps a new fire station to replace the one which was sold to (then rented from, for years) the charter school. The Emerson School property should be condos or apartments much like the Belmont School building. What a nice inrease to the taxe base that would be, but then again the city doesn't need additional revenue, right?

The kids who are "lucky" enough to get picked, get a solid education, I'll give you that, the lottery on the other hand, exitus acta probat . Success, at any cost, is a failure of its' moral rectitude.

What is this lottery? Is this the type of lottery where the person who draws the black pebble gets stoned to death? If so, can we enter other people into it?

Yes Mike..Pick the right pebble and your the Right Guy! Then you wont have to attend stupid public school like me and you'll be able to spell and walk and talk. In all reallity they must be doing something good with large turnouts like this. I wish I could Understand how its financed that part I don't get.

I dunno. I think the charter schools are funded the same way as a regular district school -- why would they be any different?

Don't charter schools have to pay for their own facilities and administrative costs (pension, benefits, keeping the lights on, etc.)?

I wish I could understand the acrimony that charter schools conjure up around this state.

Frank you need to be educated on this information before you put it out there. It is a shame that people are not informed before they post. These are everyone's tax dollars and the charter school is a non profit. Would you be willing to give the taxpayers who send their children to private schools a voucher for the dollars they are pouring into the public schools. With the interest in public charter schools I believe the taxpayers have spoken.

From what I understand, being a charter school is a trade-off. They're exempt from some rules that public schools are held to, but they're legally bound to abide by their charter, which they're accountable for.

By all accounts (and according to MGL), charter schools don't receive any facilities funding - just 'per-head' funding. So, why the big fuss about them owning property?

AnnieO, that is a great question. I am amazed at the property that Neil has aquired in our city. he has to be a very smart business man, or is he getting help from the city of Malden. Does the charter school own any property outside Malden?
Maybe Neil is wasting his time as a counselor, he is probably more suited as a budget director, or town manager or mayor right here in Malden. I would think that if he can run the Charter School as efficiantly as he has, the city of Malden would benefit greatly.

I'm not necessarily for or against the charter schools. I just continue to be amazed at the vitriol towards it every time it's brought up. Seems like good enough kids come out of the school.

Our ward did not want more condos ( Edgeworth ) we'd rather it be used as a school or for
community usage

The stats I saw showed Malden had about 36-38% of the student population. That was by far the biggest number I saw on one of the annual reports when I looked.

Imagine all the money that went into the Charter School went into the Malden Public School budget. Would solve some of the financial woes of the school and restore some lost programs.Isn't the head of the charter school also a city councilor?

According to what I read, the money DOES get appropriated to the Public Schools by the state to make up for the lost funding as if the student did attend that school. MGL Chapter 70.

Imagine if the city of Malden did what the charter school did with their money we would not have to even worry about the budget. What programs need to be restored?

You know, if everybody stopped worrying about the charter school and worried more about other programs that exist not just in the city of Malden than we also would not have to worry about the budget we would be just fine.

You guys realize that the more facilities that the charter school opens, the more of your precious special little children can be admitted, right? We don't have to get all butthurt over not making the cut right away.

I think one of the big benefits to a charter school is no teachers union.most of the teachers are right out of college.they are held accountable for how all their students do.the schools priority is educating the kids

That's funny Chris. My kids went to MHS and MC. I have no ties to that school or kinnon. I never met kinnon, but the more I read on these blogs the more i like him. He handled the gay porn star the way he was supposed to. He is building Malden in many ways. I learn alot about the school from annieo, but it is obvious she has a problem with Kinnon, but thats ok.

fred: Kinnon got rid of the porn star who broke no laws but hired the suspended lawyer and disgraced former Council President after he stole from an elderly couple: http://www.mass.gov/obcbbo/bd07-102.htm

Yes, that is one of my problems with Kinnon.

Malden Mom: The 5-6 unit place at 722 Salem St. and the two homes behind the school on Jacob St. No one knows who lives there or if they are losing money or making money on the maintenance and they sure don't pay taxes do they?

Mike G.: There is a cap on how many kids can attend no matter what facilities they build or buy.

TimH: While the teachers may by right out of college and have a lot of enthusiasm, it does not mean they know what they are doing. They are given a "script" to teach from yet they do not have the experience to deal with real life students or have the skills (yet) to command a classroom. There is such a turnover it is almost impossible to have confidence in the teaching staff. One year, the entire Math Dept. for the high school left and had to be hastily replaced. Over the course of that year, my kids had at least 3 teachers. Thankfully, they weed out the slow learners by high school so the kids who are left can keep up. The staff is treated with such disrespect that if they are any good, they head for the door at the first opportunity. When I would meet the teachers I would make a mental note whether or not they would make the end of the year. By the end of the year I knew who wouldn't make it to the next year. And it wasn't because they were bad teachers would they be gone.

Why would you continue to send your children to a school you don't approve of? You have complained about the school and staff on several occasions, but 3 of your children went there. My question to you is this AnnieOMalden, for as much as you run your mouth and seem to have your facts in order why the Charter School? Are you going to tell me you did not know this before sending your children thete? I think you just like to complain, seems as though it's your nature.

Apple: As a founding family of the school I surely did not know what I learned as I went along. I attended the board meetings and did in fact effect some small changes yet no one tells Neil Kinnon what to do.

The main reason for sending my boys to the school was I feared for their safety and it addressed my day care needs. I knew of students who were bullied at some of the Malden schools, including the high school and hoped to avoid putting my kids into that atmosphere which did not address this issue then. The other part was I had kids who learned at different paces and the school would put an advanced learner ahead into the upper grades for those subjects. Malden public was rigid in their curriculum and would not accommodate any change at least in the lower grades at that time. By the time my youngest (twins) got to high school (which again was trail blazing) they refused to leave the school as their friends were there.

If a school cannot teach to a high level given 200 days and an 8-3:30pm day then they really must be incompetent. This school is evolving and there have been many gaps which I am still not sure have been filled but that is not my problem anymore. I am more concerned with the management of the school and the unseemly issues they continue to have. This is a good school yet could be even better, if you could believe that without the Neil Kinnon machine in there. How many people would lose their jobs if he was gone? Most of his family and friends!

You found it fit enough to keep your children enrolled in the schhol after years of knowledge to the circumstances. With that being said I don't think the school is in any shape or form a bad school. I however think you just have a sour taste for Kinnon, so anything he is involved in your going to find complaint with. Your issues with Kinnon, tend to over power everything. Just because Kinnon, is not the brightest star in the sky don't mean he should be bashed for everything. You have been complain about this man for months even years. If you can do a better job them jump on the board of directors or become a city official.

Does it matter to Mystic Valley how Malden Public schools operate? Don't think so, in fact given that 300 kids from Malden came to sign up for Mystic Valley's lottery according to the story perhaps Malden Public should start looking at the Mystic Valley way of doing things as they clearly that is know what a majority of people want. Or is that not how its supposed to work in this Country? Its nobody's business where anybody else wants to sent their kids. As for taking somebodies money its not the Malden Public Schools money or Mystic Valley's Money or Melrose money its the kids money to be spent where hopefully their parents believe their kid can get the best education. Why is there any cap should be the real question. Who is that cap their to protect? Not a hard question to answer.

Fred like you I didn't go to this Mystic Valley and have no ties except as a citizen. I can see with my own eyes and talk to people who send kids there and see how many turn out to send their children there tells one all they have to know. I also have eyes for what this Councilor says and gets done and he may be like a pitbull but he fights tooth and nail for his Ward and from what I can see he stands by his convictions. The end result is definitely a big positive for Malden.

Apparently with the amount of new enrollments parents are very impressed with the school. They provide an excellent education, transportation, extra activities/sports and much more. I would rather see a school make use of vacant buildings then more condos/highrises or houses rented where owners let them fall to the dumps. Well invested in our children seems to be a bad thing????? I feel thete is more success with the students attending the Charter School.

I believe everything annie o says about the charter school. (My only source) My guess is she is alot like kinnon. During all that teacher/porn stuff, i was pissed at the liberal responses. posters like carrol M and diana where defending that clown. That guy worked at that school for a couple of months. "The kids loved him". "He did nothing wrong. He should sue the school"
I don't think Annieo was defending him.
I was hoping Kinnon would fire the guy. There are too many good teachers out there that do not behave the way that guy did. (gay porn movies).
Now I like kinnon's style.
Annieo, what i mean by you two are alike, I mean strong willed, fearless, but feminine.

As long as his private life is just that PRIVATE then he was fine. However when videos or teachers fb become public and a wealth of knowledge is put out there concerns arise. Personally I am not going to pass judgement on the teacher as I have never met him.
