Here is an idea that really works. Leave the TV on while you are gone. I have never heard of a crook breaking into a house when they heard or saw the TV on.
This is the cheapest and easiest burgular alarm you use and you already have at least one in your home..

I think what you don’t do can be as important as what you do in terms of home security.

Don’t post pictures or descriptions to Facebook while you are away – even if you think your page is secure. Items can be re-posted; word gets around fast on the internet.

Don’t let mail or newspapers stack up in your mailbox, or on your driveway or porch.

Don’t let the lawn get out of control. Don’t let the driveway or sidewalks collect snow and ice. Hire a service or someone you trust to care for your property while you’re gone.

If you have a home phone, don’t forget to check and delete messages. If a crook thinks you’re not home they may call you to check, a full voice mailbox is a convenient tip.

If you set these systems up, make sure they are secured from remote and unauthorized access of users... how would you feel if someone had access to your home security systems and your home automation systems without you knowing? It's very easy to find systems that are unprotected against such things. Make sure you know what you're doing before setting up such systems.

I live in East Milton and my home was broken into at the begining of the year. Never thought it would happen to me. They just pushed the front door in. That was the door I figured they wouldn't come through (neighbors all around and visible to the street) but they did and stole jewelery and a small amount of cash as well as ransacked the bedrooms. I suggest at a minimum that you replace or add to your 100 year old locksets in your home by getting at least an additional deadbolt. The old one on my original door barely went into the door casing and proved to be a very weak point. A $30 and 10 minute job could have potentially saved me peace of mind and thousands in losses.
I have a system now. Patriot Alarm in Canton has worked well for me so far, happy with the service they provide.

Oh, another thing. After this happened to me, I started reading the Police log more. This kind of thing happens on a fairly regular basis, probably at least 2 homes a week in Milton alone. Remember all of the car break ins last Summer? The area might be low in crime but these type of break ins seem to be increasing. When I asked neighboring police departments if they have any suspects that have admitted to any break ins in Milton, one officer mentioned Norwell had 30 break ins in November 2011 and this was also around the time the captured a bunch of addicts who confessed to entering over 40 homes in the South Shore over the last 2 months, and that was only one group.

I had cameras installed inside an outside my home, I can view my home from anywhere via the Internet an cell even if I'm out of the country. An best of all The it's recording 24/7 an being sent to my cell or my spouses so stealing the receiver WON'T HELP THE THEIF.

Comcast's new Xfinity Home Security service is amazing and one of the cheapest alternatives out there to ADT who's service is incredibly invasive and expensive.

Advanced rules/alerts that are 100% customizable allowing you to get text message video/picture updates when doors or windows open, etc.. and live streaming monitoring of video, lights, temperature etc all from any smartphone, tablet, or internet-connected device.
