It is with great pleasure we announce that Pope John XXIII High School and Malden High School will have a joint High School Hockey Team for the 2012-2013 season.  This will be the first time in several years that students attending Malden High Scholl will have an option to play high school hockey.

Major contributors to this accomplishment are Malden Mayor Gary Christensen, Pope John XXIII President Ms. Kathleen Donovan, Malden High School Prinicpal Dana Brown, Malden Superintendent of Schools Dr. David DeRuosi Jr., Pope John XXIII and Malden High School Athletics Directors Shawn Thornton and Dan O’Keefe, Past and Current President of Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey Phil Genualdo and Peter Giuliano, and many more.

The team will be comprised of players from both schools and play in a division of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference.  For Malden Students, the program will build on the success of the recently developed Middle School Hockey program, which in just a few years has attracted enough interest to field two Malden teams of 6th-8th grade players for the 2011-2012 season.  Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey has been successfully growing and gaining notoriety at all levels in the four years since the merger of these two programs, and has created genuine interest in continuing hockey for our high school students.

The Pope John XXIII and Malden High School agreement for an annual partnership for the 2012-2013 season gives the opportunity for students who were perviously shut out of high school hockey to participate and compete at the high school level - a chance that has been met with great enthusiasm among the Malden hockey community and players!
