This is great. I bet if people knew of neighbors who were elderly or handicapped a list could be made and we could all help out. I already take care of my elderly neighbors yard.

I love this idea - I often take a trast bag (Malden Blue, of course) and walk up and down my street picking up trash that people have discarded from their cars or has blown around on trash day. It only takes a few minutes and I bring my kids along to help. It's important for them to see how easy it is to make a difference.

Give me a call if you need help. Picking away at the weeds and shrubbery on the sidewalk in front my house and waving to the neighbors. Keep Malden clean.

Joe this is a great idea. We already have something like this in the winter for snow removeal. But nothing was ever brought up to help these same people out during the rest of the year. I already help take care of several elderly neighbors, but it would be nice to see other residents do the same in their neighborhoods. Now all we have to do is get JRM on board on keeping the city clean. As there is more trash left behind on trash days than there was before they picked it up. I don't understand how they can't get it all in that BIG HOLE in the back of the truck? When they do miss would it kill them to bend over and pick it up? Not for nothing but they get paid enough.

I'm admittedly not the most outgoing person around, nor the most talkative, unless I'm with family. But if I can crawl out of my shell a little at a time and brainstorm ways to get out in the community bit by bit, I'm hoping others in town can be inspired to try a little harder. As long as I'm living in Malden, I'm going to try to gently poke people to do more or as much as they are able emotionally and physically.
It never occurred to me that there was no formal program to help elderly and disabled during the Summer with little things like sidewalk care. I'm just thinking about making Malden look better. I also forgot the Winter shoveling program existed. I can barely get the snow out of my own driveway during the winter. If my regular plow guy doesn't show, it can take 6 to 8 hours for me to shovel my entire driveway by myself, non-stop. I'm just dead tired after that.

I like the "Adopt a Sidewalk" idea and I know a bunch of teens and youth at my church would love to help out too. Myself and a few adults would happily bring the kids around one Saturday a month to help neighbors in need....if we just knew who to help. I see a lot of overgrown shrubs, weeds, etc taking over sidewalks but I don't know the residents, whether it's a person in need of help or just someone being neglectful.

I think this is a great idea! My husband and I are glad to see other residents who care about keeping Malden clean and helping neighbors. We live in Ward 3 and could offer services to rake peoples' lawns in the fall. We are renters so we do not have weed whackers, etc. We do share a snow removal service with our next door neighbor who is elderly, but I don't know of other local residents in need. Does anybody in Ward 3 work with senior citizen groups? I will speak with another Maldonian who does work with seniors through her church. Maybe we can contact the Senior Citizen Center on Pleasant Street to offer our services? I would love to see initiatives like "Adopt a Sidewalk", "Adopt a Street", "Adopt a Park", or other ideas take off in the city.

The mayor's office deserves some credit for this initiative of mine. The article about Malden's walk-ability prompted me to ask the mayor's office to say something to encourage the residents to clean the sidewalks. The mayor's staff gently pushed back and suggested that I get involved in existing programs in my ward to clean streets.
Since I had only heard of the street cleaning events happening in ward 5, I didn't know what to do, so I decided to volunteer any free time on weekends to help those most in need.
I haven't gotten any feedback yet and not sure what can be done to expand this, but I hope that if I keep getting the word out, that some will ask for help cleaning their sidewalks. Some sidewalks are unusable in front of some homes and I'm not sure what to do about that yet. I don't want to trespass or anything. I like the "Adopt a Sidewalk" idea a lot.
