YOUR TURN: Should We Publish Arrest Logs?

Those arrested are presumed innocent, but their identities are public record. Tell us: Is it worth publishing every name, or should Malden Patch just focus on major arrests?

No doubt about it: names on the city's arrest logs are public information, and you have every right to read them. But is it fair to post that information online before the accused have their day in court?

Malden Patch used to publish the Police Department's weekly arrest logs, but made an editorial decision to stop the practice last year.

We did this for two reasons: While the logs are public information for the purposes of transparency (no one wants the government secretly locking people up), they also lack information about the circumstances of the arrest. We felt just printing a raw log of arrest information, without context, may be a disservice to our readers.

Secondly, while not a conviction, news of even a minor arrest can have serious consequences for one's professional life and reputation - particularly unfair if you are later found not guilty or have your case dismissed.

Your Turn

Of course, there's room for reasonable disagreement on this one: Most local newspapers do run arrest logs, and a case could be made that choosing to publish some arrests but not others is a dicey precedent for a news organization.

A few readers have complained about the change, so I figured I would call a community meeting and ask: should we go back to printing the arrest logs every week, or keep things the way they are?

Print it ALL !! We the law-abiding public have a right to know who these scum bags are that are breaking into our homes and cars. We need to know their names , ages, and rersidence. They deserve to be penalized any which way we can get back at them.

Yeah, thanks for perfectly illustrating why I was nervous about printing the logs. They should only deserve to be penalized if they are indeed convicted of the crime. Right?

I say print. But absolutely follow up with the non guilty or dismissed judgement, that could follow.

Fred, I definitely try to when I can, but it's just not feasible to follow up on every arrest over such a long period.

I understand chris. The old disclaimer, "Innocent until proven guilty" could make your job easier. The advocate shows arrests. (Revere, Everett, Saugus, but not so much in malden) They are vague in describing the arrest, but we can read between the lines.

Yeah, I suppose that's the middle ground on that one. Thanks for your feedback!

There is a major problem with that Fred. If you got to get a job and do a google search and an arrest comes up they won't continue to search to see if you are found not guilty. Also some people may get in a stupid bar fight when they are 21, if they have no further problems, should that come up on a search engine when they are 45? This is the internet age people, Records stick with people FOREVER now! and also Chris, I think this is the first time we agree, WOW!

Yup best that we are all informed who is who I say print it. The Malden News used to do it years ago.

everyone arrested deserves their day in court but the arrest logs are public records.i dont see any harm coming to anyone whose name is published.contrary to what some people think the police dont just arrest anyone for no reason.and it seems you see a lot of the same names in the police log time and time again

I'm not saying the police necessarily arbitrarily arrest people, but obviously they've arrested people that were later found not guilty.

I agree with Tim. I look at the police log every week from the Malden Advocate. A lot of the time we see the same names. I believe that residents have the right to know who is committing crimes. I understand that suspects are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. In order for police to make an arrest there has to be probable cause. Police don't make arrests for fun because after an arrest there is a large amount of paperwork as well. So I say post the arrest log.

It's public information. Post it for public consumption. What percentage of arrested people are found NOT guilty? Not guilty doesn't mean innocent. O.J. etc.
I'd say the police accuracy for valid ARRESTS has to be pretty high. I know it's hard, but TRY not to be too politically correct/safe. Your the media....inform us.

YOU ARE the media.... inform us.
I beat lil snarky to it. Old, that has become a forgotten statement in our society. Chris, please take old's advice. You will become a complete journalist, and maybe go to work for the Herald. Fox moto "We report, you decide"

Sure, well, just for the sake of discussion, there's a lot of stuff in police logs we don't run: suicides, names of minors, etc. I am all about getting information to people, I was just concerned about doing it in an ethical way. Bear in mind too that we've never stopped covering major arrests in the city. However I appreciate everyone's feedback and it looks like I'd be a darned fool not to start publishing them again :)

May be innocent until proven guilty but let's face it, they got caught. They gave up their privacy privilege when the crime was committed. Post it! Not like it cuts down the junkie scum in this city anyway.

Print Logs and say question of address accuracy and also disclaimer re: “remember, innocent until proven guilty”. That's my thought.

I have heard that when the police ask for an address after they arrest a person, the suspect sometimes gives a wrong address. Maybe some suspects have no I.D. with them and police have no way to know the correct address.

Occasionally, I have seen a police log in the Salem news which lists a suspect with an address of a Lynn rental property and I know there is no one by that suspect's reported name living at that Lynn address. Of course there are many possible explanations. But it is one reason we should read these arrest reports with an open mind and just take them as Possibly accurate information.

I'm in favor of printing the arrest logs and also more information about reported crimes in Malden.

I like Lynn's Daily Police Log online. It's not perfect but it is helpful. They only post 10 days at a time, list crime type (with a separate page saying what the codes mean), address crime was reported at, time (though that may not be the time crime occurred) and when there is an arrest they list name of person arrested though not where or why (but sometimes you can infer it).

Thanks Chris for exploring this topic. I hope you can ask the Malden Police sometime how they obtain addresses (and name spelling) for people they arrest and whether they ever verify these.

To many of malden city halls finest would be showing up in the logs. That's why Chris was probably ordered to stop posting an arrest log. Minions need to follow the leader. It's not his fault.

I visited my Aunt in NC, they have a weekly paper called "The Slammer". It shows everybody who have been arrested, what they have been arrested for, whether it be a crime or failure to pay a fine or failure to appear... Innocent until proven guilty, Of Course! However, continual repeat offenders?... That may speak for itself..
One downside is that a few people can be found smiling, even, grimacing in their photos. I heard that when they took a mugshot, you couldn't smile- because it was going in the paper- if you did, you were penalized with more time until you could take a pic with a straight face. Some people must have been repeat offenders to the point they found it fun-- My cousin's told me that some of their classmates intentionally try to get their picture in the Slammer.. I thought it was pretty cool to keep folks aware of what is going on in their neighbor hoods... May be try a test run, see what the response in crime is- higher/lower...? If offenders know that they are going to be exposed to the public, perhaps they will think twice for fear of being recognized.
I would think there would be a drop in crime- people like attention but typically not negative attention- especially within a condensed city area. NC is different because it was mostly rural and there isn't as much activity down there.
