YOUR TURN: Malden Patch's Constitution
In the interest of fostering constructive dialogue on the site, we took your ideas and drafted a draft Comments Constitution for Malden Patch. What do you think?
Readers - would you ratify the constitution below? Share your thoughts and concerns with other reader in the comments, and remember: this is just a first draft.
We, the People of Malden Patch, in order to form a more perfect comment section, establish justice, ensure online tranquility and provide for the common defense, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the comments section of Malden Patch:
1. We are all Maldonians: Or, at the very least, human beings old enough to understand the value of being polite to one another. So please, keep this first amendment in mind at all times when commenting on our site, no matter how tempting the insult. We're not here to play “gotcha," we're here to have constructive conversations with our neighbors about making Malden a better place to live. Let's respect that.
2. Fredom of Speech: You spoke, and we listened – comments removable from the site will remain limited to the following, though bear in mind an editor may make an executive decision at their discretion per our terms of service:
- Comments promoting bigotry
- Spam/Advertising
- Posts that are sexual in nature or contain overt innuendos
- Those with language unsuitable for network television
- Any kind of threatening or harassing remarks.
While we won't delete comments that are merely insulting in nature, repeated acts of harassment will be moderated, and threads that devolve into prolonged flame wars may be stopped by the moderator. Repeat offenders could face a ban from the site.
If you feel you are the victim of harassment, email editor Chris Caesar at Chris.Caesar@patch.com
3. Members must use a real email address: While it is up to the reader whether to use their real name on the site, everyone must register with a real email address. This information is only accessible to editorial staff and is not made public in any way. Accounts found to be registered under fake emails will be deleted and banned. This has always been a requirement in our terms of service.
4. Appeals: Those who wish to appeal a moderator's decision may contact editor Chris Caesar directly at Chris.Caesar@patch.com. Any attempts to appeal the decision within the comments section itself will be deleted. This is to prevent a thread from straying from the topic at hand.
5. Have fun: The last thing we want to do is make readers feel like we're coming down on them. On the contrary: we feel if everyone takes the initiative to keep our comments respectful, thoughtful and insightful, Malden Patch will be a better experience for everyone.

Mr. Lightbody was the man (though he kicked me out of homeroom for refusing to do the Pledge of Allegiance...) ;)

He shouldn't have - Supreme Court upheld your right to do that in the 40s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_State_Board_of_Education_v._Barnette

Mr Wright, Can I ask you why you chose not to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance?
Nick Wright

@ Mary, I guess I never bought into the idolatry of it, and I had assumed it was my right to do so. He evidently disagreed, and that actually started my downward spiral. After that, I got suspended for trying to make the case that I should be able to wear my hat... outside... because it was, you know, cold out. They told me it was against the rules. I said it was a stupid rule. They told me we could "discuss it in private." I told them that there was nothing to discuss. I got suspended for a week, and never came back. I guess I just don't know when the fix is in, so to speak. Authority always seems to win, even in this case where logic was on my side in both instances.

Luckily for you Mr Wright, we live in the U.S., where you have the freedom to choose...... at least we dont have to bow to a photo when we enter a room, for now anyways.

With all due respect, if he has the right to choose, why give him a hard time over it?

With all due respect Mr G, Hard time? I beg your pardon!

Nick I think you need to get your facts straight...When you were in the homeroom I was not the homeroom teacher, I shared that room with another teacher...I did have you for Civics and if I threw you out of class it was for other reasons...those were my first years in the system and I had a duty not a homeroom....still here if you need or wanted to talk.

MLB, you absolutely were my homeroom teacher. It was in the old building, I believe on the 3rd floor. I'm going to say... 1998? That sounds about right, though it could have been 1999. It was the last year of my attending MHS, before I was told it was in my best interest to drop out and join the Army by Mr. Lyons (who I honestly think was looking out for my best interest, even though in retrospect that was terrible advice.)
When else would we do the Pledge, Mr. Lightbody? Of course it was during homeroom. I don't know if we're getting into semantics over your title or something, but you took role call, in the morning, prior to the 1st period. During that time, we did the Pledge of Allegiance, and you told me that I was not welcome in your room if I refused to do it so I left and never came back. :P These are facts.
I still think you were a top notch teacher, I just think you let your personal beliefs get in the way in that instance. Sometimes, we make mistakes. We're all human.

Chris, that is very interesting about the Pledge of Allegiance case. I read it and is a good case decision in my opinion.

Thanks. I actually did a fairly large project on student rights as my senior thesis in high school, so it sprung to memory. Funny how the mind works, even in its dotage :)

Rule #2.4 is vague. Anything is said on network TV these days, even nudity is showing up in the 8PM to midnight time slots. These new rules seem to invalidate themselves unless this is clarified. Are these "living" rules that get re-interpreted every so often?

Haha, excellent constitution joke, and fair point about network TV. Maybe we can use the George Carlin standard? I guess I don't want to erase posts just because someone says "hell" "damn" or "ass", etc. but would have to intervene for some of the bigger ones that we all know and love.

Greg I am kind of a stand-up comedian nerd: I love new folks but also the "oldies," like Carlin, Lenny Bruce and the Smothers Brothers. I actually had the sublime privilege of catching Carlin's act once in his later years .

On topic, I think everyone should be required to post under their real name. We'd have no way of telling, I guess, but it keeps things honest.

"Members must use a real email address: While it is up the reader whether to use their real name on the site, " simple- for got 'to' as in 'it is up TO the reader'

Oh also- regarding using real names for posts? I never use my real name on line. Ever. And especially in such a small venue, such as Patch, where I'm posting locally which makes my privacy almost null... You don't have to be registered on Patch in order to read comments. What If I post something someone REALLY doesn't agree with or an argument ensues or etc ... and my full name is posted, it's far too easy for someone to track me down.
Also, conversations skew often on the political/personal and what if I make a comment that isn't in line with the views of my employer and they happen to see it?
You may want to call me paranoid however I've had an internet presence for over 15 years and have run into issues with internet running over into personal in a very scary way so I do speak from experience.

Don't worry about it. A policy like that is not in the cards.
