Lacrosse Splits Games

After losing their opening game against Minuteman the Mystic Valley Eagles lacrosse team split their next two games beating Greater Lowell and then losing to North Shore/Essex Aggie.

The Eagles got their first win of the season against Greater Lowell by a score of 15-10.  The Eagles fell behind 2-0 early in the game, but responded and took a 7-3 lead at the half.  Senior midfielder Jimmy Rossi led all scorers with 8 goals and 3 assists (one point shy of school record for points in a game).  Jayden Jean had 2 goals and 2 assists, Marc Toomajian had 2 goals and 4 assists, and 7th grader Jack Ryan scored his first varsity goal to round out the scoring.  Brandon Kelso, Robby DeSantis and Joe Daley all played well defensively and Zak Stour made 11 saves in net.  The Eagles enjoyed a 15-5 lead in the fourth quarter before the Griffins put on a late run to cut the lead to 5.

Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to keep it going on Saturday and lost to North Shore/Essex Aggie 17-7. Jimmy Rossi lead the offense with 6 goals and one assist, while freshman Zack Marks scored his first varsity goal.  North Shore controlled much of the play as their much improved offense had their way with the young Eagles defense.  Zak Stour made 15 saves in the loss and had one of his finest games in defeat.

The Eagles’ next game is Wednesday when they travel to play Shawsheen at 4:00.

Mystic Valley Baseball Wins Northeast Tournament

For the first time in school history the Mystic Valley Eagles baseball team won the Northeast Regional Baseball Tournament this past weekend.

The teams’ first win came on Friday when they soared over Lynn Tech 18-3. Brian O'Connor went the distance and picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles. Offensively a flock of Eagles contributed to the eighteen run barrage.

In the championship game on Saturday the Eagles beat host Northeast 10-5.The team fell behind 4-2 but battled back and was able to take the lead and eventually build on it. Kyle Howard was named tournament MVP.

Mystic Valley Softball Starts 2-0

Mystic Valley’s softball team picked up its second win of the season on Friday. The team travelled to Everett to play Pope John its second Commonwealth Athletic Conference Small Division opponent of the week.

Mystic Valley started strong again scoring 5 runs in the first before the second out was recorded. The first inning rally was highlighted by a double by junior Rachel Tortora and a triple by junior Jordan Sullivan. Mystic Valley pushed the score to 7 - 1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning on Senior Sara Marraccino's second homer of the season. Pope John found the range and tied it at seven with 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Much like the St. Clements game on Wednesday, the uprising from Pope John seemed to anger the Lady Eagles who put 6 runs of their own on the board in the top of the fifth behind home runs by Marraccino (her third in two games) and Tortora. After Pope John closed the gap to 13 - 10 with 3 in the sixth, the Eagles pushed across 2 well needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh fueled by junior Michelle Doherty's fifth hit of the day.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pope John scored two, making the score 15 - 12 and were looking for more. Senior left fielder Marisa Cagno had other ideas and sealed the deal with two outstanding catches to end the game.

Mystic Valley had 20 hits including Marraccino's second and third home runs of the season and Rachel Tortora's first home run of the year. Violet Sullivan went 4 for 5. Junior Michelle Doherty went 5 for 5 making her a startling 9 - 9 with a walk in her first ten at bats in 2012 as well as playing stellar defense at shortstop.

The win on the mound goes to 8th grader Leah Thomas who is now 2 - 0. Next week starts CAC conference play with a game against Shawsheen on Tuesday at Anderson field.
