Who Will Run for Kerry's Seat if He's Appointed Secretary of Defense?

Would it be Scott Brown? Congressmen Markey or Capuano? Tell us who you think should run.

The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would be the next Secretary of State.

Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014.

Conversation from the breakfast table this morning to the morning commute has everyone talking - who will run for Kerry's U.S. Senate seat if he's appointed? Could it be Scott Brown? Or maybe Congressmen Ed Markey or Michael Capuano?

Only time will tell, but we know you're talking about it. So tell us, who do you think will run for Kerry's seat if he's appointed? Let us know in the comments section below.

In this crazy state I'd expect Duval to appoint Joe, Joe, Joe so there would be a Kennedy back in the Senate. Good Grief!

Of course Scott Brown will run. He is great at winning special elections. He could become a permanent senator in MA, who just serves out the rest of other senators terms two years at a time.

Wht kind of mentality that should appoint Kerry who was and is a questionable candidate for any office!
Too many forget what he did with his medals and attitude about our government.

Not a Kerry's fan for sure: his candidature for president was almost as bad as that of Romney this time around. But I would remind you that he did a noble thing with his medals back then. 1) It showed integrity on his part, because 2) he realized that our government was nothing but an imperialist power, which had no business being in Viet Nam, causing the death of almost 2 MILLION Vietnamese.

Thank you Quasi... exactly my point... amazing that the swift boat campaign is still fresh in peoples mind.... remember free speech and the right to speak out about a wrong war such as kerry did... hes an excellent candiddate and Im almost certain that the negative comments here about him come from citizens who HAVE NOT defended this country like John Kerry did

Quasi,
I would have shown integrity if he threw his medals and then later did not display them in his office. He said at the time he threw his medals, and later when asked about the ones in his office, he said he threw someone else's. I don't see the integrity there.

Walter,
I am proud of enlisting in the US Army. I served under President Carter and President Regan. But I am no fan of Kerry. You are right, however, I did not defend the country like he did, as I did not have a camera crew with me, nor did I go to France and speak with the enemy.

Bob,
Thanks for stating the truth.

I'm getting mixed signals. Will there be an election or will the Governor appoint Kerry's succesor?

If an election I'd love to see Brown run ans also win.

When Romney was Governor, and Kerry was running for President, Beacon hill was nervous that the 'R' Gov would appoint someone who did not toe the Democrat line, and they changed the process where the Gov could not appoint an interim Senator, but there would be a special election instead.

Just a couple years later, there was a "D" Governor, and Ted Kennedy died, which left an opening, but now the Gov could not appoint. To fix this, these same politicians on Beacon Hill partially reversed themselves, and allowed the Gov to appoint an interim Senator until the special election, which he did. (To assure the appropriate vote for certain legislation that the President was keen to get passed)

So, the current law in Mass is that the gov can appoint an interim Senator until a special election can be held.

And for those who care, I am an Army Veteran, and am not much of a fan of Senator Kerry. I recall that he is on record in saying that he threw his own medals from the time, but when asked many years later, he is also on record to say that he threw someone else's medals. In truth, I do not know for sure, and while I am not a fan of Kerry, I am not much of a fan of any of the current lot who makes a living as a politician. Most are bad players who are corrupt, because the whole system is corrupt. Some are just worse than others. For me, it is kind of like comparing the different aromas of various kinds of fertilizers.

Actually they were someone else's medals. "Liveshot" still has his in his office. What galls me is the Winter Soldier hearings he used to libel everyone who served in Vietnam. Kerry also met in Paris with North Vietnamese representatives and his family's Real Estate company got a billion dollar contract with the new communist government.

Hey, Gene, aren't you for free enterprise? The Kerry Group has entered into a partnership agreement with Beingmate of China, for the supply of Irish dairy ingredients for infant nutrition applications in China. Now, what's bad about this? Would you rather have had the Kerry Group to enter an agreement supplying weapons?

The US Government has been doing business, on a much higher level, with Communist China for years, and so does tens of thousand of US companies, and also practically every Americans by buying all the communist Chinese junk.

If Kerry gets tapped for either Sec of Defense or Sec of State It will be very interesting to see what Deval Patrick will do with Kerry's vacated seat, as when Senator Kennedy passed, he went on the record with saying he did not want to give a temporary appointment to anyone who would be a candidate in a special election since it would give that candidate an unfair advantage.

quasi,
I may be wrong, but I think the Kerry Group is actually Kerry Group,Plc and is a company based in Ireland so I do not know what you are talking about. As far as I can tell John Kerry has nothing to do with it. As far as free enterprise, I have no problem with it at all, but some people felt it was terrible for Romney to be successful, I guess it is better to marry money, then to earn it. Also, why does Kerry skate, did he not try to avoid Mass taxes, by docking his yacht in RI.

THEBIGBT

3:12 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012

The BIGBT sees it this way. NOthing is going to happen as far as Kerry goes. With the CIA chief stepping down, seceratary of state and treasury rumored to leave in addition to Bernanke retiring from the FED. Obama may need all the Democratic votes he can get in the Senate. Why risk having Scott Brown back. If anything Patrick would get the AG role and leave the State with an interim governor. Kerry is rich and out of touch, but the president needs him just where he is now.

He should go find a two party state and move there.

We would be fortunate to have Scott Brown again as our Senator. We keep hearing about DC gridlock and Brown proved to be a principled guy who worked hard to end the standoff. John Kerry is an opportunistic creep of no character...perfect for the MA masses who continue to vote the Democratic line with the mantra "he will give us free stuff." Secretary of Defense? It would be laughable if it wasn't so scary!

I totally oppose Kerry moving to the Cabinet in any position. He will never be president and should not run again. He should continue to ably represent the Commonwealth as an "elder statesman." If he goes to the Cabinet he'll be in and out in 4-years, and we'll be left with 2 entirely junior senators. Not good for MA-ers.

I remember when I went to Zanzabar, which was a former nightclub in Boston,I was standing in a line to get into the club, you wouldn't believe who came along with Kerry, there was another man with him in a suit.I think they came from the State House after working over time which was like after 10:30 pm,I am not sure what year it was,but it between 1988 to 1991. Now tell me something, was Kerry single at that time or is he still marry? I thought I saw Kerry and his partner went right into the club. Was he looking for another woman at that time or is he cheating behind his wife? And not only that ,there was another line on left side of another club, guess who was standing there with a big red weather balloon,Harvey Leonard, who used to work for channel 7 down the street, now he work for channel 5,did you know that he had great full set of hairs? Well, now let me talk about John Kerry, did John danced with another woman inside the club while I was standing outside the line? That is the BIG question! By the way,the bouncer at the front door let Kerry and his friend into the club first before everybody in the line ,that wasn't FAIR!

That is a pretty fair complaint about my term. Not all who voted for Kerry are idiots. (I did not say that all who voted for him are idiots, but that millions are). I am sure there are many who simply believe in values that are different than mine. It is the reason I am so proud to have served in the military, to defend everyone, including those who think other than as I think. 5 weeks ago I was wrong to use the that term. Thanks for calling me out on it, however, I am no one's partisan tool. I am a conservative, but find very little difference between the politicians with a D from those with an R. They all place too much value on the party, and too little on the country.

Then he later said he threw someone else's medals over the wall when someone saw his medals in his office. Then he parked his boat in Rhode Island to avoid Massachusetts taxes, and on and on and on.

You have a good point. I too, as a veteran, want to give him the benefit of the doubt, because of his active duty.

His other activities however, work hard to undermine this benefit.

If my memory serves me well (which is not obvious) you have already posted the same argument. So, I'll post mine. Kerry was a COMBAT vet no question about it, and he earned his medals, which is more than many "veterans" who happened to be behind a desk at the time of the war.

What he did after, is commendable. He brought the truth to this country, a truth that still many like yourself, Robert, do not want to acknowledge, much less believe.

Quasi,

The fact that you use "veterans" in quotes is an insult to any who have been in Uniform. If you had ever done any active duty military service, you would realize that especially if you volunteer, but any time in Uniform, you do what your orders tell you to do. No one who has stepped up, and volunteered to serve this great country, will get a "quote" title from me. They are all worthy and honorable people. I do not care if their orders told them to take a rifle and take a hill, or take a pen and help to manage the logistics. Some did see more hellish action than others, but it was and never is their personal call.

As far as what he did afterward, you can feel it commendable. Many do not. I do not so much care if he told his story that may be different than mine, but a lie is a lie, and a lack of honor is a lack of honor. You may, and are welcome to respect his record. I respect your expression of your views. I do not agree with all of them however.

I have never seen the NRA support automatic weapons in the hands of unlawful people. (Automatic weapons are illegal for private use in the US unless you are a collector with special federal authorization)

Some people are simply unfamiliar with many things. Confusion is a bigger problem than many.

Tom

7:11 am on Saturday, December 22, 2012

It's not the honest collector we are worried about. It's the semi automatic weapons that are in the hands of the wrong people. 74% of all gun owners are law abiding good people who believe in 100% background checks according to the NRA stats. It's the other 26% of licensed gun owners who sell 40% of the guns in the US that have no background checks. These guns are ending up in the hands of the wrong people.

Make sure whom ever you vote for Senator in MA that they will fight for gun control to protect your children from gun violence & not put them in harms way.
