WATCH: Salemwood Teacher's Quirky Video Wins School $5,000

Check out the 60-second clip that won $5,000 for sixth grade science teacher Jourdan Marino's classroom.

A sixth grade teacher at Salemwood School won $5,000 to spend in his classroom after a quirky science lesson he produced won an online contest for educators.

Jourdan Marino entered the MathMovesU-sponsored contest last September, in which participants were challenged to “teach a 60-second out-of-this-world lesson on video that communicates one or more interesting fact about space or space exploration using an apple as your main prop.”

In his entry, Marino adopts the persona of “Dr. Albert Hess,” a mad scientist hawking an imaginary “common apple kit” he claims can teach students a number of Earth Science concepts.

Marino's friend Matt ”Smitty” Smith is also featured as the short's easily impressed student.

“My best friend ...(had) just came back from the Army,” Marino wrote in an e-mail. “(We) made this video at the last minute.”

As for the prize money, Marino is weighing his options – he's considered purchasing a classroom telescope, putting the funds toward a nature field trip or some gadgets for his Smart Board.

“I have lots of ideas and plenty of time to consider them,” he said.

Whatever he decides to spend the money on, let's hope Dr. Hess doesn't get his hands on it.

Great work, Jourdan! I wonder if people also know you're a gymnastics coach who helped bring Burlington to State Championships?

Gee! First class teacher protected by union rights. Inspiring interest in science. No pornographic movies. Vote no on Charter schools. Thanks Mr Marino and Matt.

There are some decaffinated brands on the market just as tasty as the real thing.

Mr. Marino is an AWESOME educator. He deserved to win that money; whatever he'll decide to do with it, I am absolutely certain the kids will benefit from it. And I enjoyed the video, too!
