Aren't the height requirements clearly posted?

Why doesn't the truck driver know the height of the truck, ridiculous!

Agree with Alethia - this is so common. Live right off Medford Street in Ward 1 for almost 25 years and have seen this same thing several times a year. Drivers pay no attention to posted signs but maybe they should make sign even more pronounced or put warning signs farther down Medford and Commercial Streets as well. The MBTA will always say the bridge suffered no structural damage but how can the same bridge be hit so many times and that be the case? I always feel uneasy in stopped traffic when I am under it waiting for light to change. I think city should really assess that bridge and upgrade signage and warnings.

Seriously? This happens way too often and it's CLEAR that the warning system on the street is INSUFFICIENT. The City absolutely needs to install better advance warnings systems to prevent these crashes in the future. Suspend a warning bar from the traffic lights, have flashing warnings, buzz strips, anything! This will be money better spent than having police and fire respond each time.

You'd be surprised at the pounding rail trestles can take, there's a notorious one that someone takes videos of regularly, I think he's got 60 crashes documented: http://11foot8.com/ And this is with flashing warning lights and a HUGE sign!!

Maybe they should make Medford St "NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES" And have it enforced by DOT for about a year. There is other ways around to got to the other side of the city. RTE 60 is just up the street.

Grew up in Ward 1 myself and its common to see a truck peeled bac like a sardine can on Medford st.

On my way to work this morning travelling under the bridge, there is nothing except 2 small signs announcing the bridge's height clearance of 12' 6". Totally insufficient. It should have additional signage like "Extremely low clearance" and "Caution" signs at a minimum. I like other suggestions to ban commercial traffic on that road because you are right, it would be better placed on Route 60. This is a chronic problem and there will be more crashes in the future as there have been in the past unless some action is taken by the city. I live in Ward 1 but not sure that area is still in 1 or maybe it's in ward 2 - does anyone know? I will call my councilor to let her know. Luckily no one has gotten seriously hurt but the bus crash a few weeks ago on Soldiers Field Road in Boston says low clearance can be a very dangerous situation.

Hi, I agree this happens way to often! To answer your question CALB70 the bridge is the dividing line of one side is 1 and the other is 2. I am going to see what can be done to help the area. Signage, Re-Routing, Something! I will work with the Ward 2 Councillor to come to some possible solutions. And of course we will bring the MBTA in on finding an answer! We Hope!

If anyone has any experience in things like this or an idea I can explore please let me know.

On average once a month with a police officer having to back them out. It is not 12 foot six the road was repaved and reduced the height. The only marking is on the bridge itself. Its not the drivers fault it is the MBTA's Fault for not checking and re checking the height, It should be on the MBTA's dime to install a flashing warning sign.

I drove those things for forty years, I always believed the signs, he's toast, closing your eyes and going fast won't get you safely under the bridge.

The bridge is well marked and the blame lays with the driver.

Ah, David, the standard height on a reefer trailer is 13ft. 6 in.

That bridge has been being hit for as long as I can remember and I'm 72, I've seem them have to let all the air out of trailer tires so they could back trailers out from under it.
