See Malden's Active Firearms Licenses

What do you think about President Obama's proposals to curb gun violence?

On Wednesday President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden unveiled a number of efforts aimed at curbing gun violence in the United States.

Massachusetts is home to some of the toughest gun control laws in the country, with local members of Congress urging the federal government do more to prevent tragedies like that in Newtown, Conn.

The state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security provided Patch with a summary of active firearms licenses in Malden from 2008 through 2012. Here are the numbers for Malden:

Permit 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012
Firearms Identification Card 148 154 152 139 124
Firearms Identification Card Restricted Chemical Propellant Only 76 91 105 109 108
Resident Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms 851 940 995 1059 1165
Resident Class B Non-Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms 10 10 10 10 11
Resident License to Possess a Machine Gun 3 3 3 2 2
Total 1088 1198 1265 1319 1410

More information on the kinds of firearms permits available in Massachusetts can be found here

Nothing he did would have stopped the kid in Conn. so all this show time. We need better background checks and none of the efforts stops the criminal who obtained their gun illegally anyway. I don't have a real solution bit it seems they don't either so just hurt the people who are law abiding and move on to the next problem.

I don't like guns, don't want one, didn't grow up around them, never saw one up close except in the holster of a police officer where they belong. Don't think the world needs to be armed to the teeth and it's sad and unsettling that 1165 people in Malden can carry large capacity weapons and somebody else has a machine gun. I hope the president has some luck putting greater oversight on gun sales but I fear he won't be able to beat the NRA.

Cal, lots of people are against guns until they need one. Many people get the class a license because it allows them to carry concealed, not because of the capacity. And think of it this way, there are 58,900 people in malden that dont carry, you're looking at less than 2% of the population.

Obama's agenda is strictly political. Why all the kids at his announcement. Why the vice president to suggest solutions. Enforce existing laws before making new ones. Does gov. Patrick think 7 rd magazine instead of 10 rd magazine will do anything to control crime.

Its probably for an antique tommy gun, not something you'd want to fire a lot cause the rounds are expensive, especially firing at that pace, but the owner is just being a responsible gun owner.

What I find most incredulous, is that once again Hollyweird and the rap music industry gets a free pass.. If I'm not mistaken wasn't a known rap artist with violent lyrics invited to the White House ? Also wasn't the lovely First Lady seen demonstrating that danced craze, (no not that Gangnum) the "Dougie"?? A quick Google search and you'll see where rapper Dougie is now !! #intellectualpoverty #academicegghead

Chris, so if you bought a gun you would become more violent? A violent person useing a gun, or any other weapon for that matter, is a violent person. The gun has nothing to do with a persons nature.

Nah, I'm not saying that at all. But I think there is reasonable debate about the correlation between a country's gun ownership and gun death rates; at least moreso than a tie to rap music or violent movies.

Not as many children would have been killed at Sandy Hook if large capacity assault weapons were banned. The shooter there took the assault weapon from his mother who bought it legally. If she wasn't able to buy it, I doubt this guy would have went out looking for one. So we can and should do something about that. And to all the people out there who are worried about a tyrannical government, read this: http://www.salon.com/2012/12/28/iraq_vet_newtown_changed_my_mind_on_gun_control/#comments

I love trying to absolve the shooter by saying if he did not have the guns he would not have commited his crime. The two largest mass murders were commited with box cutters and airplanes(9-11) and a rental truck with fertilizer(OK city). These people are monsters, with or without guns.

Mark the Bushmaster AR15 that was at Sandy Hook was never used, Adam Lanza never took it out of the car, that being said it was a Civilian Model meaning 1 squeeze, 1 bullet. Lanza killed those Children and teachers with handguns that his MOTHER taught him how to use. Correct me if I am wrong but if you fear someone, you shouldnt give them access or training with weapons such as a hand gun

Eddie

12:20 pm on Friday, January 18, 2013

All these laws will do is restrict law abiding citizens, plain and simple. Our court systems need to put people away when they are arrested for illegally possessing a firearm. I believe anyone caught with a gun who isn't licensed should be locked up for 5 years Mandatory, and while you're at it give them 1 year per bullet in the gun. Also, anyone who commits a crime with a hand gun should get 10 years and 1 year per bullet. Right now there is a limited supply of ammo for the Police because people are buying ammo by the cases, throw in that gun Manufacturers can't keep up with the demands for guns. President and Gov have done 1 thing they fueled a spending spree guns and ammo.

And YES I am one of the 1400 who leagally carries a hand gun, saw a man buy 5 cases of ammo this morning

Eddie the police cheif has to ok the permitt in the city. This has been since 1968 when I had to register for a shotgun. The police chief has to know. Pistols and all firearms. This is true in all cities. Im not against guns owned them since I was 12 yrs old. Grew up in the Linden Highlands we all had rifles. Handguns since I was 20. But unfortunatly I started taking seizures and gave up all my guns voluntarily. The only thing I have now is a POTATO GUN. Because I am left with Diploplia (Double vision) I couldn't hit the side of a barn door with a banjo. lol :>)

In all seriousness, Andrew25 makes the really important point that is often overlooked in the numbers arguments. The numbers of license holders (from propellant to machine gun) shouldn't be the concern. We know that they've gone through checks and went through the required hoops to legally own these items. It's the people who didn't that are worrisome.

The gun shows should be shut down. The laws in this state are a lot stronger than many other states. If others were at least as strong it would cut down on the illegal handguns whose owners cause "most" of the problem. If you cut down on that, we would have a much better chance at dealing with what is left over.

I don't know anyone who can go to a Mass Gun Show and walk out with a gun if they are not legally allowed to have one. All the gun shops represented there call in to make sure you are still valid to own. Totally legit and by the law. Shutting down gun shows isn't going to solve the problem. I agree with backgroud checks for all though, nationwide.

Lori Sullivan

1:43 pm on Friday, January 18, 2013

First of all, I hate that they keep calling them assault weapons. They are NOT assault weapons, nor are they automatic. They only "resemble" assault rifles the military would have, but they are semi-auto. Second, the machine gun licenses were most likely issued to a dealer or someone who is a collector. Third, who cares what kind of guns they are, if they are being bought by law abiding, trained (which you have to be) citizens. There's a lot about Sandy Hook that doesn't make sense, and they are telling us only what they want to tell us in order to push an agenda and make us afraid. The AR15 was removed from the car and never used inside the school. It's all political BS. Why don't we try enforcing the gun laws we already have instead of trying to make new ones and infringe on people's rights.

what? why are you so upset about the "assault weapon" label? are you afraid of hurting the guns' feelings?

I think the problem with the assault label, Alicia, is that it doesn't MEAN anything consistently, so anything that looks similar to military weapons (but works differently) is an "assault" rifle. It also implies one weapon is necessarily more lethal than another.

I don't want to be hit with bullets regardless of whether they come from an assault rifle or a firm handshake rifle (don't get me started on why "hate crime" is a dumb term). I don't want to be stabbed with assault knives, or hit with assault bricks. A violent crime is a violent crime, and that's the difficult part to handle - people often use objects to seriously hurt and kill each other, and it is easier to pin blame on the tool used than explain why people do such horrible things to each other. Banning a particular set of weapons is a deterrent in the same way the death penalty is a deterrent.... it isn't. If someone is going to commit a crime so heinous, they aren't thinking about method much more than consequence.

It is dangerous to think a large gun with ten rounds is more dangerous than a small one with seven... and it is freakish that this is the argument to start. But it is easier to pass laws that control objects than it is to ferret out than really complex and sometimes completely incomprehensible reasons people do horrible crimes.

Alycia, if it really was an assault weapon, I would have no problem with them being called assault weapons. The media and politicians call them assault weapons to push their agendas and scare people. But again I say, they are not assault weapons. So why not call them rifles, which is what they are.

AnnieofMalden, Please explain how you will shutdown Gun shows? Just give me one good idea (Tip: You won't be able to). The only people these laws effect will be the legal, law abiding citizens.

The real issue here is the poor mental health programs in this country. That is what we should be talking about, not law abiding citizens who are practicing their 2nd Amendment rights.

There are 2 different problems being addressed here. One is the mass murders who many times obtain there guns legaly and who, in my humble opinion, are nearly impossible to stop. The other is the common thug with an illegal gun. This seems like a solvable problem but easier said than done I guess.

Andrew25

2:30 pm on Friday, January 18, 2013

I would say the reason is it's not really an assault weapon... it's a semi-automatic rifle. It's also a magazine, not a clip(also 2 very different things ). It does make it easy to see who knows absolutely nothing about guns.

This article is straight from the George Soros playbook.. Notice the attempt by the editor to marginalize LEGAL gun owners and categorize them like sex-offenders on a chart. I wouldn't be surprised if an interactive map is forthcoming with precise names and addresses like we seen in Westchestet County NY.
This is a classic example of how the lame-stream media operates..1 Identify 2 Marginalize/Isolate 3 Discredit 4 Demonize

A Andrew in regards to do I have to worry about licenced gun owners the answer is yes. Many guns that were issued in Malden were confiscated in Demestic Assaults. In regards to obtaining a gun could have one in 15 mins. Easy to get. What I had said was in my post that The guns dont worry me but the Machine guns do. They could fall in the wrong hands, I dont think the Patch should have posted anything about the number of guns that are owned at all.
