Prisoner Escapes Work Detail in Malden

Police found the prisoner, who will be formally charged with the escape, about two hours later.

A prisoner from the Billerica House of Corrections assigned to work at Forest Dale Cemetery Tuesday afternoon walked away from the scene, but was apprehended by police about an hour-and-a-half later on Cedar St.

A spokesman with the Middlesex County Sheriff's office said state privacy laws barred him from naming the prisoner, who was convicted of a non-violent offense.

The man will be publicly identified when his formal charges are made public at the Lowell District Court.

“Anyone at the Billerica House of Corrections (face sentences of) 2.5 years or less – your murderers and things like that aren't at the house of correction," department spokesman Michael Hartigan said.  “The majority are in for drug-related offenses."

"...your murderers and things like that aren't at the house of correction,"

It's comforting to know that these guys are still in the apprentice training program.

I hope the Patch will follow up on who this prisoner is, as soon as the information is released.
I have my own personal reasons for this, which includes my safety and the safety of my family. Although if it is this particular prisoner, I should be recieving a phonecall (with a follow up letter), to inform me of the incident, by the Victim's Services. I also firmly believe that the prisoners should not be allowed to lift weights while incarcerated, thus making them "bigger and badder," when they get out!! It makes no sense. Another thing, why do we pay to educate these prisoners so they can get a degreee, while everyday people struggle to pay student loans, etc.. It's just wrong. I'm done venting now. Thank you.

Deanna I hope it wasn't the person you have in mind but please remember, the criminal justice system hopes to rehabilitate these "people" so they can be responsible productive members of society. It's been 15 years since I was in your shoes but my nightmare looks like he finally "gets it" and is working and trying to take care of his 2 young sons. While we are not friends, I do offer him encouragement and advice to help him help himself.

My thoughts are: Has the Sheriff's Department officials charged with watching the detail been reprimanded/fired? Never mind the prisoner's name, how about giving us the name of the officers that were on duty

Great Point, Raj. I didn't think of it that way. Thank you.
