Police Respond to Attempted Bank Robbery Downtown

A police spokesman confirmed the attempted robbery at the Centre Street Bank of America, near Stop & Shop.

Police are responding to a reported attempted bank robbery at the Centre Street Bank of America just a little before 7 p.m. Thursday night.

While no further information beyond this confirmation was available, scanner reports indicate a witness told police the man threatened to use a gun but did not produce it.

Police were reportedly looking for a white male in his late 20s, wearing a grey hoodie, black baseball cap, grey sweatpants and a scarf.

Witnesses on the MBTA reported that the Malden Center trains were briefly stopped as police looked for suspects there, but have resumed service.

More information as it becomes available.

Wow, that's where I do my banking!
Does anyone work for living anymore?
I guess robbing the bank is equivalent to robbing the state with the EBT cards!
Try being the only one paying hard earned cash in Market Basket today, that was witnessing a robbery in progress!!!!

That's interesting, comparing a social program to a potentially armed robbery of a bank.

It's all robbery, until you need a social program, then it's justified.

Chris!
You cannot so naively think that EBT abusers don't exist!
I beg of you as a reporter to spend one day in the Chelsea, Market Basket!
It would blow your mind just how many customers are paying with an EBT card.
The carts are overflowing, I am sorry but a "social program" as you call it should not be just handed out to "everyone"!
I am all for a hand up when needed but not a hand out!
It is every race and every age

Alethia I am with YOU! I was just at Market Basket on Wednesday to prepare for the storm. Every time I go there I get more FRUSTRATED! Have seen MANY things that should send up a red flag! Last week there was a very nicely dressed woman in front of me with her young son. The child was very nicely behaved and I was quite impressed - that is BEFORE she pulled out SEVERAL vouchers that looked as though they could have been from WIC! The child was dressed in a Ralph Lauren jacket and she had a beautiful coach bag. On many occasions I have seen people in front of me on FANCY CELL PHONES - way fancier than my antique pre - paid Verizon flip phone and OF COURSE in the end they pay with their EBT card! This is an OUTRAGE! Hey, in today's economy I'm sure there are MANY people who truly need assistance, BUT C'MON PEOPLE if you can afford an expensive phone with a $50.00/month text & data plan (that is just about the standard rate out there at the moment) I don't think you need help to pay your food, heat, rent...etc!

Well Maldonian, I think I can top that one. About a month ago in the Chelsea store, a rather attractive, well dressed woman was in front of me at the cashier's line in the Chelsea store. I won't mention the fact that she was speaking Spanish (I'm sure Mr. N.Y. Times will edit this as well) amazing, I know, that she was speaking Spanish in Chelsea (you're a racist, Paul). She had a new Iphone....a Chanel handbag, as well as the Chanel sunglasses....Gucci shoes, with designer jeans (yes, I was checking her out, so sue me!) She then whipped out the good ole' EBT card. I can't repeat what the guy behind me in line said without removing the children first :)

come on Chris! If they can afford Ralph Lauren they shouldn't have WIC - or EBT's or free rent while you and I work to get nowhere fast - I will never forget my father helping me out by giving me 10 bucks for diapers way back in Mal's, long before Stop and Rob - I lost the 10 in the store and panicked! We sure as hell could've used WIC back then - I used cloth diapers for the week - it's a matter of something called PRIDE!!! i

......I have a neighbor who - from what it looks like - is running his own business (trucks here parked in the driveway - he and his "crew" are in and out ALL DAY LONG!). Know that the house he is living in is SECTION 8! I would certainly like to know how someone running his own business qualifies for section 8?! Know there are "girlfriends" and "boyfriends" who don't get married ON PURPOSE - are NOT supposed to be living together, but ARE and have children just so they can collect MORE, MORE, MORE! I shop at Market Basket so that I can save money - some of the things I see these people purchase are so FRIVOLOUS! Get so upset when I see this! Think if an undercover agent from the government spent the day on my street and at Market Basket it would be EXTREMELY beneficial! $$ If all this WASTE was eliminated this country would be in a much better financial state! SO SAD!

Did they see the robber on Glam Cam ? Any pics? Was he in the Radio Shack store before he robbed the bank staking out the bank before he made his move? They all seem to know when to hit. This is why Glam Cams are important you would be able to see who is checking out where they will do their crimes.

surely there must be some sort of equivalent to godwin's law in terms of how long it takes for someone on an online comment thread to make that rather generous leap to redirect the conversation toward denigrating poor people. it seems like people are awfully eager to find an excuse to talk about it. that or to blame all of society's ills on the illegals.

Ive been there too Jay and what that nut case3 says about EBT cards is untrue. Many shop there in bulk for their grandparents and also many Elderly. I have never ever had a problem there and they are all pleasant people. The food is allways moving fresh coming in all day. The best part is there are no finger pokers in the meat section like stop n shop. You do not have people eating the grapes after their fingers have been up to the Knuckle in their nose either. There are no goookies on thge shopping carts either. I like that place and they are building a new one at Northgate.

A guy robbed 6 banks including one in Malden. He served less than 10 years in prison. Just recently he aledgedlly violently/forcefully raped 2 women in the Roxbury section of Boston. His bail was set at $60,000. This was in yesterdays Boston Herald.
My point is why are we continuously blaming Mayor Gary Christenson and the city we live in? The fault lies clearly in Washington DC and the Congress and also the criminal rights coddlers that has infested Beacon Hill !!
The lax judicial system got those women raped and its business as usual on Beacon Hill because WE allow it !! #waronwomen

Beacon Hill is the problem, not that ugly shadow casting building that impedes the flow of foot and vehicular traffic on Pleasant St. The US Congress is the problem, not that bundled up person walking to the MBTA Orange Line, which we(including me) look at in skepticism .

Some of you , it seems , are hating on Market Basket in Chelsea. I, for one, don't. There is a real reason why you see the EBT cards flowing in that store. Look across the parking lot, and you will see Stop & Shop. Stop & Shop, by definition, is generally expensive. So if you folks were on the EBT flow chart yourselves, of course you want more bang for your buck. Stop & Shop is not the answer if you want more food in your cart. Stands to reason, don't you think?
