OFFICIALS: Public Safety #1 Priority

Councilor-at-Large David D'Arcangelo sent a message to his constituents after last night's shooting.

For updates on the shootings, check out our original article

City officials are reaching out to residents after two shootings rocked the city about 12 hours apart this weekend, noting the incidents were not random acts of violence and urging vigilance.

"As a Councilor-At-Large, I want to make Malden residents aware that these situations, and all other public safety matters, are being handled with the utmost urgency," he wrote on his Facebook wall. "I have been in contact with the mayor and Malden Police and am confident that the (Malden Police Department) is doing everything they can to solve this case, other incidents and future crime."

"Let's all work together without compromising ongoing investigations," he said.

Mayor Gary Christenson was also on the scene of another shooting Saturday afternoon, and told reporters that the two shootings were not random in nature.

"Our officers are working diligently on addressing these incidents," he said.

Words words words. Action speaks louder than words. But at least councilor darchangelo cares enough to pony up and speak out. Thank you.

Sure it is David that's why the FD is using a 25 year old spare engine that should not be on the road and why they had to borrow a spare engine from Revere since 2 of the regular engines were out for repairs. Then they have the 2 ladder trucks that are 15 and 12 years old which have both had mechanical issues. That's just the FD's apparatus issues. Haven't even gotten to the fact that the PD is understaffed by 20-25 patrolmen.

I lived in Linden most of my life and the city fathers always forgot about the east side. They thought it was part of Revere and Revere would take care of Linden. Last section to be plowed in winter. The blizzard of 78 Rowes quarry owners plowed Linden. The Rowe family always took care of Linden, now it is a big metropolis of its own.

Action Speaks Louder the Words. Lets get our neighbors to come forward if this is a rnot a random act and prevent another Dorchester moving to our neighboods.

What about he shooting at the skate park last week. Oh that's right it doesn't count because the shooter was a bad shot and the kid only had minor injuries. The city is run by incompetent hacks. It really is time vote them all out next election

They seem to be rating the seriousness by how bad the victim was shot. Typical playing it down. Thats all the polititions do is Talk,Talk,Talk, and more Talk nothing but foolishness comes out of their mouths and for another year nothing gets done. The police are doing a fabulouse job. Howard M has got the right Idea. Tell the polititions to stop Grandstanding and get out there in the streets with the people instead of Facebook. Lets look the peolple in the Eye and tell everyone we are goin to do something.

You can't have a cop on every street to protect you. Maybe you should get an ordinance that Kennesaw, Georgia has had since 1982. It states, In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore. I have been in contact with the PD down there and they say crime has gone down to almost o %. I am going to put this on our ballot this Nov election for my town in Maine.

A big difference between Kennesaw and Malden is frankly Malden is a much larger and overall a less wealthy area.

Malden: The median income for a household in the city was $45,654, and the median income for a family was $55,557. Males had a median income of $37,741 versus $31,157 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,004. About 6.6% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.6% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.

Kennesaw: The median income for a household in the city was $61,355 and the median income for a family was $ 75,465 . Males had a median income of $46,953, versus $42.809 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,165. About 8.2% of families and 11.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.1% of those under age 18 and 13.3% of those age 65 or over.

An area being economically depressed is well linked to having increased crime. Keep in mind these factors aren't adjusted for cost of living differences, and Georgia will generally always be cheaper than Massachusetts. It could help, but the effect likely wouldn't be the same in Malden as it would in Kennesaw. Kennesaw also had a very low crime rate to begin with, compared to Malden's. I'd definitely like to see more research on the topic.

My other concern is that requiring citizens to purchase and maintain a consumer good from a private company seems to tread on an individual's constitutional rights.

Alternatively, you could just move to Kennesaw, which strikes me as an "everybody wins" scenario.

"As a Councilor-At-Large, I want to make Malden residents aware that these situations, and all other public safety matters, are being handled with the utmost urgency," - but the problem the crime is growing much faster than you could handle.

If crime is making residents uncomfortable...lets create a city where its uncomfortable to commit crime...people loitering in the city at parks at all hours is a sign of potential disturbances...its why there are posted signs with park usage hours...but the more telling sign is still unknown. What were the motives aside from yesterday afternoons shooting allegedly over a girl? why the shootings occurred will help set the course to prevent them again....also remember...most if the current government has only been in office 6-7 months...previous had years to work on this...ideas are needed not accusations, sarcasm, or poor attempts at humor...that's not going to help. Call your city counselors and demand they work in this problem immediately and hold them accountable for results.

Scott, I've contacted ward 7 councilor Neal Anderson a number of times in the past regarding public safety issues and incidents. After the first couple of times, he's stopped responding to me entirely, which leads me to believe that he doesn't take the residents' concerns in his constituency seriously. The irony is he sits on the committee for public safety, but I bet a majority of people don't know that, since you rarely hear from him regarding this topic (except the one time when he tried to push for an ordinance to muzzle pitbulls, that was initiated by Neil Kinnon).

Thank you Councilor-at-Large, David D'Arcangelo, for stepping up to the plate as a representative of Malden. Most appreciated. Hopefully others will follow in your footsteps.

You stated "I have been in contact with the mayor and Malden Police and am confident that the (Malden Police Department) is doing everything they can to solve this case, other incidents and future crime."

I agree with you. I've never doubted the Malden Police Department. They can only do so much with what they have. Our Mayor has taken a step in the right direction by bringing on board three new police officers, for which he should be commended. That should make a huge difference.

You stated “Finally, the Mayor’s upcoming Monthly Public Safety Awareness meeting will address the recent shootings. The meeting will be held on Monday, August 27th from 6-8 pm outdoors at Lincoln Commons on Cross Street.” Forgive me, but why wait for the next Public Safety meeting? That’s a week away. While I do understand that he cannot give us any information into the ongoing investigations, and I respect that, why not an emergency meeting this week to let our concerns be heard? There are a lot of frightened people right now in Malden, including me, so why make us wait? An emergency meeting cannot be held with some, if not all of you who represent Malden sooner than August 27th? If you were willing to meet this week, I am willing to bet that people will show up to voice their concerns.

Hey Carol, how about telling the rest of the 'constituents' to step up to the plate, and stop peeking out their windows, and doing nothing?

Hey Paul, I was not aware that it was my job to tell the rest of the 'constituents' to step up to the plate, and stop peeking out their windows, and doing nothing. If they have not figured out by now that this is the 'right thing to do', then the guilt falls upon their shoulders.

Meggie, first of all I see you don't like to identify yourself. 2nd, you don't have to by a consumer good from private company. There are a lot of indivduals that sell also, and about your constitutional rights, be careful who you vote for president as the one there, wants to take your rights away. I give you credit for being so knowledgable about Kennesaw and Malden stats.

Marsters- I don't give out my full name because I've personally experienced the consequences of doing so. My safety, and the safety of those who live with me, is more important than a few people online finding me less credible. The Internet is a scary place, and you might not have seen how terrible people can be if they don't like your opinon, but I have, unfortunately. It would be easy enough to track me down if someone wanted to from here, but I'd rather not hand it out on a platter.

Also unfortunate, both viable presidential candidates are all about increasing government control of our personal lives, but that's another discussion all together :).

And thanks, Finding stats and info is one of my hobbies, heh.

I hope that public safety is taken seriously and not just used in a political game. The police here have been cut to dangerous levels. At one time we had policemen working in the housing projects and on bicycles and walking around. Now they don't have enough cops to fill their shifts. Buy a scanner and listen and see it's incredible if you can hear their terrible radios.

Jake, maybe the city should solicate the companys putting in all these high rise apartments and condos for money to increase the police dept. personnell. They bring in all these people and don't want to help out the city. I know they pay real estate taxes but not at 100% valuation of property.

We had no trash pickup....had to burn are own...We did get plowed with a big ol V plow. The Howletts lived across and had a small farm their too. We were the Forgotten Ones...but im glad no one bothered us. Every Sunday Morning we would walk across rt C-1 and target shoot with the Revere Cops. At 12 years old we all had guns and used to walk across Rt C1 with 22's and 30 Carbines and go shooting with them. Try doin that now! Ah the good ol Days!
