Subway, Bus Service May Extend To 2 AM on Weekend

YOUR TURN: Would you use later subway service? Hate it? State transportation officials are considering plans that would extend most weekend MBTA subway services to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday

It's a complaint we've all heard about the local nightlife: the country's oldest subway system doesn't run much later than 12:30 a.m., even on the weekend.

But WCVB-TV reports that could all change for riders this year, thanks to a pilot program proposed by state transportation officials that would keep the T open until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

"If additional operating funds are identified, major bus routes and the most heavily traveled portions of the subway and light rail systems will be considered as part of a pilot program," MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in a statement.

The changes would require legislative approval and a likely tax or fee increase, according to the report.

You can read details about other proposals - including rail service from Boston to Springfield - at the MBTA website.

Readers, what do you think? Is this a waste of money or a necessary modernization? Would you use the T after 1 a.m.?

Hash out your concerns with your neighbors in the comments below.

Everyone knows that any lowlife who isn't tucked into their bed by the time that nice Leno man comes on deserves to be stranded where ever they are. Also mugged, maimed, or murdered. C'mon folks, it's just common sense.

Luckily, I just make it home from my second job at one of Boston's glorious theaters before that nice Leno man comes on. No change for Malden needed. It doen't matter what time of day or night for crime. However, more frequent runs on Sunday of the 108 or 106 would be better.

I hope the MBTA stations some police here as I rarely see any and think the train stations have some scary folks hanging around them.

Why not make it 24 hour service so the drunks and the low-life who rides the T at 1 am doesn't need to worry about getting back home by am, I mean 2 am.

Right, far better that the drunks should drive home.

You know, sometimes being out at 1:00 am just means that you're a person with a social life. Y'all are welcome to your canasta, but I'm gonna be out dancing.

I don't think it's going to happen, and it's because of comments like the ones above. For some reason, it's not okay to have a social life that involves being home after midnight.

I mean, the lot of you aren't okay with DUI checkpoints, but you're okay with cutting off bus/train service early in the evening. This isn't 1950, we're not in the Puritan era anymore.

Thank you Mike.... I was just about to say. Folks like Diana, are anti-social, get carpal-tunnel from using to t.v. remote all night. How dare anyone be out after midnight, be responsible enough to take a cab or the bus if they've had too much to drink, let alone have a social life. We, who have a life after midnight, how dare we! Watch much t.v., Diana?

Um... yeah. I'm all about the drinkin', dancin' and gallivantin'. I not only take the T after midnight, I occasionally walk home from Malden Station afterward if there are no cabs at the stand. Never. Shot at. Once.

Oh yeah, I'm all kindsa badass. ;)

Why not at least try it. All nite would be the best. If we get more resturants and clubs here it will add to bussiness. But the Malden Police has allways been the first responders at a MBTA issue the T police should be doing their job here in Malden or Malden should be charging the police everytime they answer a T call.

Paul: I think you missed the sarcasm in Diana's statement. It's not only drunks that are out after midnight. It is those who serve the drunks and their friends who are forced to drive into the city and pay the ridiculous parking fees. If the trains ran longer you would eliminate a lot of the traffic and limit the emissions from this traffic. Yes, the drunks would be on the trains yet they would have a chance to sober up a little while someone else is doing the driving. I ride the train late at night and most of the people I see are working people like myself.

Nothin worse than being on the Meat Train at rush hour and someone violently upchucks, then there is no escape and the next thing ya know 4 or 5 or more gets sick too. Or maybe you set down in the seat and you find out your sitting in a lake.
