When Will The Oak Grove Bike Cage Open?

With the majority of work done at the Oak Grove “Pedal & Park” site, the bike cage is expected to open this spring, according to a MBTA spokeswoman.

A reader recently submitted a "You Ask Patch Answers" question about when the Oak Grove bike cage would be opening. So, we found out where things currently stand with the project.

With the majority of work done at the Oak Grove “Pedal & Park” site, the bike cage is expected to open this spring, according to a MBTA spokeswoman.

"The Oak Grove 'Pedal & Park' construction is substantially complete," wrote Kelly Smith, spokeswoman for the MBTA, in an email to Malden Patch. "However, we are awaiting final approval from the state building inspector before it can be officially opened to the public. We expect to be able to open the facility in April."

The most recent improvement made at the site include minor electrical work completed in January and "the project is now almost fully complete," Smith said.

"Once approval is received, the only remaining work is to install some additional informational signs to help users access the facility," Smith said.

The bike cage costs approximately $350,000, according to the MBTA.

Funding for the bike cages comes from the American Recovery and Reinvest Act (ARRA), which provided the MBTA with $4.8 million for a variety of programs to improve and expand MBTA bicycle parking facilities.

The MBTA is also building up to 50 covered bike shelters, called "BikePorts," at subway and commuter rail stations, as well as expanding the number of conventional bike racks at MBTA stations.

350K to put up a fenced in cage with a gate on it to lock up bikes. Seriously?

With the T crybabying that it needs to cut service or raise fares again, it seems moronic that so much money is being given for bicycles by the American Recovery and Reinvest Act*** (that's the stimulus folks)**** that should have been use on infrastructure instead of this "green energy" initiative that is not going to have any positive effect for the environment!
Seems to me a great expense for a fraction of the population...and a sure target for vandals... There are so many other things that need to be done in this country. How about repaving roads instead of making bike paths and creating bike shelters! Just shows you how messed up priorities of this administration are...

******The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) (Pub.L. 111–5) and commonly referred to as the Stimulus or The Recovery Act, was an economic stimulus package enacted by the 111th United States Congress in February 2009 and signed into law on February 17, 2009, by President Barack Obama.
To respond to the late-2000s recession, the primary objective for ARRA was to save and create jobs almost immediately. Secondary objectives were to provide temporary relief programs for those most impacted by the recession and invest in infrastructure, education, health, and 'green' energy.****
