I'm unsure of your question, Steve O. Why is boston.com reporting something, is the question?

They didn't, they're speculating based on "sources close to the search panel".

They should hire the best person they can. This city needs help and we'll see how serious the new mayor is about cleaning this city.

Found it. Interesting speculation. The last chief was appointed 2 years prior to his retirement. Honestly, what could anyone expect a man to do with a two year term just before mandatory retirement?

they do that to boost his pay, his retirement is based on his last three years, so now he gets a much bigger retirement check. This happens all the time in the school dept,, 3 years left and you become a principal, and it does seem like that sucks but its better when a fireman is "acting chief" for the day, falls out of a truck while no one is looking, and goes on disability with Cheif pay. I actually like Jimmy Holland, and I;m not sure what else he could have done acting as a bridge between two different Mayors in the middle of an economic downturn with fewer state and federal dollars to help cover costs.
