What is the problem? A little snow keeps kids home, I doubt it. They will be out causing problems and hanging on back of cars, "ski patrolling" get them back to school. A little snow didn't stop us back in the 50's from going to school and we walked. No school buses etc.

David, thats back when we had neighborhood schools, when almost all the kids walked to school, all the neighbors knew the neighborhood kids since they walked by twice a day. Thats one thing I think has really ruined this city. Now, for the sake of a few federal crumbs thrown our way, every school is a traffic nightmare twice a day, mothers sit in front of schools with their cars running for hours so they can "get their spot" which is bad for the children and the environment, and the neighborhoods arent as close knit, that AND, the kids cant walk to school.

I live in Edgeworth and it is horrible still. MVRCS you have no consideration for the safety of those children, bus drivers or your staff. You should be ASHAMED that you have opened school. The streets are not plowed, the sidewalks are horrible and you expect children and staff to be safe? Disgusting decision on your part.

The school is a business, which might explain why they're open. Money rules!

There's a reason MVRCS has top schools. Cause they're not pansies who dumb their kids to sit in front of the TV all day for a little snow. Teach your kids how to look both ways for car and to stop being dumb.

And parents have to go work too so we need the free babysitting service of schools. Saying schools are closed due to snow isn't a legit excuse for MOST jobs.

I agree schools need to be open by Tuesday, but not today. Most school walkways are not cleared, no room for parents to drop off and pick up safely. Another full day of clearing the streets, sidewalks and then yes, but today was not good. There is no driving space on most roads for cars to drive down the streets. Much to much plowing still needed.

How would you like to be an MVRCS parent today trying to drop off/pick up your child at school, with the condition of the roads as it is? They must be loudly cursing councilor/MVRCS chairman Greg Kinnon...

I don't know which MVRCS you drove by. Maybe you drove by their former high school site in Everett. MVRCS on Laurel St cleaned both sides of Laurel St curb to curb. On Salem St. they removed all the snow from the sidewalk so parents would have plenty of room to drop off on Salem St or Laurel St. From what I see htye had not control over Jacob St. which the city does not enforce the parking ban and the street was not plowed wide enough. They also opened up the corners and crosswalks up as well. At the high school they cleared the sidewalk in front of the building on Highland Ave. and on the Charles St. side they removed all the snow from the corner of Highland Ave. down to their driveway. When did Greg Kinnon become the Councilor/Chairman of the MVRCS...somebody better tell him. lol

I know they like to bash those Kinnons but Greg Kinnon and Co. Did a wonderful Job making the MVRCS properties look like a SAFE Spring day.

I am a teacher there and I felt very safe with my students being there in a safe environment.

Better chance of getting hit by a plow when you are out of school reather than when you are in school.

Part of the problem is the DPW came out Sunday night at 11:30 pm after everyone had just settled in after a weekend of shoveling their property, and decided it would be a good thing to widen the street then, and proceeded to bring 2 huge tractors that pushed the snow piles that the contracted plow company had put on the sides of the street (Broadway) and push those piles onto the sidewalks and driveways of citizens who had done everything right by clearing their property and making a walkway for kids who walk down here to get to school. Now, because of the action of these tractors, there are piles of snow over 8 feet tall on some sidewalks. We had to go out and basically reshovel the two days of work we had done because the city did not plow the roads right the first time. The handling of this snowstorm was an epic fail of the Mayor and DPW, and the fact that school is still closed is a testament to that. Other town have snow removed from their sidewalks, Malden decided sidewalks would be a good place to push the snow!

Does anyone know if they plan to remove any of the huge snow banks in front of the high school? If not, the-drop off tomorrow morning is going to be a nightmare with cars stopping in the middle of the street to let kids off and getting out of cars in the middle of traffic. There is very little room there. A very big safety issue.

I think that they should keep the school closed for at least a week. Not for safety reasons. Just so they can drive their MOMs nuts. lol
