Malden Teen Missing for Nearly A Week

Friends and family are urging residents to keep their eyes open for Brittany Geer, 17, who was last seen leaving Malden High School on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Friends and family are keeping hopes high for the safe return of a Malden High School student now missing for nearly a week.

Brittany Geer, 17, who lives with her father in Malden, was reportedly last seen leaving the school on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Geer's mother, Lois Cummisky of Marlborough, described her as an "outgoing kid" that would "talk to anybody."

She acknowledged Geer had run away from home a few days before this disappearance, but notes she quickly returned under 24 hours.

"She just suddenly disappeared," Cummisky said. "There was no big fight."

Friends & family respond

As Geer was previously reported as a teenage runaway, State Police will not issue an AMBER Alert for her disappearance - a source of much frustration for Cummisky.

But the hurdle hasn't stopped her from conducting her own detective work, posting "missing" posters across the city and contacting Geer's friends for help.

The flyers have also been rapidly disseminated over social media, with students forming a popular #HelpFindBrittany hashtag and repeatedly retweeting her picture.

One photo of the missing student had nearly 1300 shares on Facebook

Two teens?

Cumminsky and a number of classmates referred to a second female student who may be accompanying Geer, though this info was not immediately confirmable late Monday night.

Cummisky said she believed the two girls were together. Geer's Twitter account refers to the two of them listening to music Feb. 7, the day after she was last seen.

Both girls' Twitter accounts have gone silent since that date.

Anyone with information about Geer is encouraged to call Cummisky at (508) 933-4776, or "Brian" at (781) 322-0113, or the Malden PD at (781) 322-1212.

Horrible that they wont issue an Amber Alert she is a child, granted she ran away before the was back within 24 hours she has been for almost a week. My heart breaks for her family, I hope they find her soon.

very disheartening that an Amber Alert was not issued. who are the police to decide this. running away before means she is in distress for one reason or another. shame on the police for not issueing an Alert. I will share on my FB page until she is found. Come home Brittany.

Three criteria must be met before the State Police will activate the plan:

(1) A child, 17 years of age or younger, has been abducted.

(2) The child is in danger of serious bodily harm, injury or death.

(3) There is enough descriptive information to believe that an AMBER Alert may
help locate the child.

Since 2002 the Massachusetts Child AMBER Alert has been activated 15 times and successfully recovered and reunited 23 children with their families

That's disgusting that there is no amber alert. Does it truly matter she is missing and everything possible should be done shame on them for not doing what needs to be done.

Everyone should flood the State House with calls to the Governor. I hope she didnt meet a stranger on Facebook they are loaded with nutcakes. The State Police should change their game plan on Amber Alerts.

The family and the police should comtact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and get her listed as an endangered runaway. If she is seen, you can't just grab her against her will and hold her for the police. The missing poster on Facebook does not have any info on it, not even her name. That makes it difficult to share info with any agencies or people who will look for her.she should be classified as an endangered runaway and then the local media will pick up the case and blast her poster on the news.

Lois
Does she have a cell phone? My daughter went missing on me when she was 15 and the police wouldn't do anything, she had a sprint phone and when I contacted them, they said they would have to call the phone to track it. Finally I had a friend tell me to look up her cell records on line and see where she had called last. I did and found she had called NYC. I called the number and sure enough she was down there with someone she had met on line on a dating site. Thankfully I got her back safe and sound. I hope this helps you. We will post and share and let you know if we hear of anything. My prayers are with you through this, I know the feeling, I really do.

Donna, I absolutely agree......... It's just really sad no one is helping, thank god for Facebook, I guess........... The police hate paper work, and that's how they look at it........... It's very sad, but if it was there "runaway" teen, I'm sure it would be another story? Blessings to u and ur family......... I'm sure she's safe........... Im going to post her pictures now. I have people from different cities and states on my Facebook......... We can't just limit a search to one area......... She's 17.......... As I said I'm praying all goes well, and she is returned safely back where she belongs............. Oxoxo

Lois I think one thing we can all agree to, is that the thought of a child or any loved one who is or goes missing has to be one of the greatest most dreaded nightmares
we can imagine in our personal lives. Going through this now, for you must be unbearable and it would be for any of us. I hope that everything soon will work out for you and your daughter. I guess we can all that some solace, that having Patch to put this out there for everyone to see will make this happen sooner than later. I realize you can find little comfort at this time, but remember there are Patch outlets in a multitute of cites all around in this state and this country. I hope people keep posting about this very important and personal story, for you and your daughter and the more that do, I believe this would increase the chances of a positive outcome. My heart is out to you and your daughter. Please keep your faith and hopefully soon, your prayers will be answered. To all Patch posters please tell your friends to write and talk about story because it can only increase the chances for a happy ending.

Do we have details on what she was wearing? Known favorite hangouts? friends vehicles information? has her social media accounts been reviewed, emails accessed? Has the GPS on her phone been checked, etc. Making updated posters and online shared fliers will help...most recent pictures, make sure positive messages from loved ones are on her Facebook and Twitter in case she is checking them. The AMBER Alert is for known abducted children, with little to no information here it wouldn't be effective...there is no vehicle or adults she is known to be with, there is no current physical description of her clothing, Using Facebook, Twitter, etc and the media will be more effective than an Amber alert, an Amber alert is effective because of the ability to describe vehicles and locations...Just keep posting, sharing and updating...keep photos posting everywhere...the more everyone shares the more others will share and her picture will be everywhere....

Thats right Patch is all over the country. If they can put it in all the Patch's all over would be great. Does Saugus PD know? All missing kids end up at the Square One Mall. She could be still with a freind and you know teenage girls and Malls. Try them all in the area.

Lois- as the mother of a teenager I am so sorry, this is every parent's nightmare and this mom is thinking of you. I agree with several comments that you should go to the media. Contact FOX25 first - they cover these types of stories more than other local stations especially Mike Beaudet and Bob Ward at myfoxboston.com. The legal loophole here of not qualifying for an amber alert because your daughter had run away before is very newsworthy. The intent of the alert is to help kids in danger. You should e-mail these guys and the assignment desk - I'd advise doing all 3 at the same time so you cover all the bases and they can see who else you've reached out to at the station. Someone will call you back and hopefully they will do a story and help you get the word out. Good luck!

This is the way AMBER Alerts work every where - not that I necessarily agree with them, but their logic is if the system is overwhelmed with kids that may be willful runaways or 'custody kidnappings,' the alert will lose efficacy broadcasting information about kids who are actually violently abducted, which is the purpose of the network.

I was actually surprised to learn this too.

Sadly, this case doesn't meet the criteria for an amber alert to be issued.
1. A child, 17 years of age or younger, has been abducted;
2. The child is in danger of serious bodily harm, injury or death; and
3. There is enough descriptive information to believe that an AMBER Alert may help locate the child.

Please do not look at this as a slap in the face to the family. I've personally shared the photo several times today. I pray that she returns as well.

So she must of been in school on Feb 07,2013. Her last tweets were on Feb 07,2013.

Folks, Amber Alerts are for CONFIRMED kidnappings where the child's life is in danger.

If Amber Alerts were issued for every runaway or custody case, the system would be overwhelmed and Amber Alerts would mean nothing.

Why is Facebook have another name? I just got an e mail with a Facebook pic and it has a different name. I copied and pasted what is said on the patch at least 50 not counting whats being fowarded. My daughters and their friend
s are nurses and are fowarding to different hospitals, tow truck drivers and rubbish truck drivers I know. You should CORRECT that name in Facebook. Has someone gone to the MBTA Police with the picture? They are located In Cabot Station Broadway and Dorchester Ave. They have a data base where they can play back all cams.

Where there is no amber alert Im sure the MBTA and local police will help. If she was seen in Wonderland then she has gone on the Blue Line to Oreint Heights or Downtown Boston. If she is just hanging out she may have gone to Fanuel Hall where all the young teenagers hang out. Im just presuming IF She is Riding the T.

When they turn 14 years old they turn into jeckle and hyde. On the scanner you here where lost and runnaway kids are found all the time. Jay its a big difference between E Mails ..Telephones.. And looking into the MBTA officer in the eye and asking for help. Just trying to help with my thoughts thats all.

First kids run away for a reason. If in fact she ran away. If her home wasn't distressed then she wouldn't leave. They have access to any computers she would have used to see if there may be any insights. Secondly, her phone. They can get info from it. If it has a tracking device they can track her. There shouldn't be any limitation on any amber alert. Running away or not! The CHILD is missing! Bottom line! The system that is put in place to protect us, I don't feel protected. It seems like there are just as many good cops as bad or crooked.

Unfortunately the local and state police do not set the policy for issuing amber alerts the legislature does and they recently eliminated chins and began faces program for runaways, now the police are have little power in relation to runaways. If a child is 17 years old they are considered an adult in MA and you can not force them to go home.

17 is not really an adult!! I consider an adult at the age of 20.... this is ridiculous , if it was one of their own children I'm pretty sure they would want answers!!! As far as quianna I believe she knows something but don't want to say.
