Local Sports Roundup: Bad Week for Malden Catholic Soccer

The Malden Catholic boys soccer team lost twice this week while the Mystic Valley freshman football team won its season opener.

The Malden Catholic boys soccer team had a rough couple of games this week, losing, 1-0, to Xaverian on Wednesday and dropping a 2-1 decision to Cambridge on Monday.

To add insult to injury, Wednesday's loss was the first win of the year for Xaverian, who improved to 1-8-3 over all while the Lancers dropped to 4-5-2 overall and 2-3 in the Catholic Conference.

Next up for Malden Catholic is an 11 a.m. road game on Saturday against first place St. John's Prep.

Mystic Valley Volleyball Loses To North Shore

The Mystic Valley volleyball team lost a 3-1 heartbreaker to North Shore on Tuesday. The Eagles dropped the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-15, before winning the third set, 25-18. Mystic Valley continued to show improvement in the fourth set, but North Shore was able to hold the Eagles off for the 25-23 win.

Mystic Valley Freshman Football Win Opener

A day after the Mystic Valley varsity football team dropped a 42-0 decision to Northeast Regional last Friday, the freshman team avenged the loss with a 20-8 win over the Knights on Saturday in the team's season opener.

Woodsy Prosper rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Mystic Valley while Devantae Davis broke off a 20-yard touchdown on the last play of the game.

The Eagle defense played well on Saturday and was led by Robbie Cummings and, David Chiccuarelli and Ken-jii Barthelemy.
