Local Holocaust Survivor Dies

Sevek "Joe" Fishman, 93, ran Fishman Tailor Quality Plus

A Malden man who survived the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi Holocaust has died.

Sevek “Joe” Fishman, 93, of Malden, was buried in Sharon, MA Sunday, and is survived by 3 children and ten grandchildren. Fishman, well-known to his customers, ran Fishman Tailor Quality Plus on Summer Street in Malden.

According to archives at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Fishman and his late wife Lonia – whom he married in Warsaw – escaped the ghetto for her hometown of Wegrow, where a peasant couple agreed to hide them on their property.

The couple hid in a hand-dug hole lined with straw for nearly 18 months, until they were liberated by Soviet forces in 1945. After their prolonged confinement, records note, the couple had to relearn how to walk.

The pair emigrated to the US in 1948.
