DA: Teen Shooting Suspect Arranged to Meet With Victim
Tyrell Berberena, Jr., 17 of Malden, faces charges of armed assault to murder and possession of a large capacity firearm.
The 17-year-old arrested in connection with Monday's shooting of another 17-year-old near Warren Street allegedly knew the victim and had arranged to meet when the shooting happened, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
Malden Police arrested Tyrell Berberena, Jr., after the shooting, according to a press release from the DA's Office. He faces charges of armed assault to murder and possession of a large capacity firearm and will be arraigned Tuesday morning in Malden District Court.
At 10:31 a.m. on Monday, Malden Police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Warren Street and Eastern Avenue, according to the DA's press release. Police found the victim with an "obvious gunshot wound;" he was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital according to earlier reports and is currently being treated.
Malden Police and State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Malden, PLEASE bring back that monster unit from The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office! (I do not know what this vehicle is called.) This is what Malden needs again! We felt safer when it randomly showed up on our city streets a few years ago to tone down the recent increase in crime! No disprespect to our former Sheriff, but I simply do not understand why Malden stopped bringing in this unit when the Sheriff passed on. Was he the only one who had permission for us to have it come to Malden? Our current Mayor worked for this office, so he must have some pull to get it back. Someone asked about this at the last crime meeting, but I don't recall what the response was about bringing it back. I don't know about anyone else, but I would feel safer knowing that it is here again. It is going to be a full year before our new police officers finish their training. And with four shootings in less than one month, Malden PD simply cannot wait! We need them back on our streets NOW!

Does Malden have a Police Chief? Or is Mayor Christensen the Police Chief? When there is a fire, the Fire Chief speaks to the media and makes a statement. When there is crime, Mayor Christensen speaks to the media, makes a statement and reassures the public. If we have a Police Chief, I would like to hear his expertise and ask him where he's been while the Mayor answers crime questions and takes all this heat alone. I also want to know what this Police Chief.... If we have one... Is actively doing to help make us safe.. If we don't have a Police Chief, we really do need one desperately. Someone good. Does anyone know who's in charge of our safety? .... Besides Mayor Christenson, "obviously"!

I dont see why it is a problem that the Mayor is answering to the public when a matter of seriousness, such as this, takes place. To be honest I think its actually a good thing, and shows that he cares for the city and citizens of Malden.

Yes it does matter, Anthony. The majority of Malden citizens do not doubt that our “current” Mayor cares, and loves, his city. I certainly believe that he does! But where the hell is the Malden's Police Chief? I too think that it is a good thing that our "current" Mayor shows that he cares for “our” city, as well as for its citizens of Malden, but where is our current Police Chief to share his sentiments?

Valerie, I agree with you about the "non-responsive" Police Chief. I don’t even know who he is. He wasn’t at the last meeting that our Mayor held about the crime in Malden. I give credit where credit is due. I wouldn’t want to be in Mayor Christensen's shoes right now. His dream was to be Mayor of Malden, and he was left to pick up one big mess! Two (2) thefts in our Treasurer’s Office, daily crime all over the city; shootings, holdups, drugs, (and all because our last mayor said that our city was not violent, and quite frankly, didn’t give a damn towards the last four years as mayor of our city!) Very sad! Mayor Christensen has “a few” “uncaring” council members who refuse to go away due to family members, and friends, voting them back into office, as well as “some” new members of the city council beating him up. Very disappointing to me, as I adored one of those “new” members at one time, and believed that he would make a difference for the City of Malden. Instead, he decided that he would “shadow” the Ward 6 Councilor, whom by the way, was best buds with our former mayor. Rumor has it that he dislikes our new Mayor because he convinced himself that he would be sitting in the Mayor’s seat right now. Thank goodness for Malden that he is not!
Mayor Christensen is not only our Mayor, but our Police Chief as well, all the while trying to clean up the mess that Howard left him. He doesn’t deserve this! Stop blaming him folks! He is trying!

Carol,
The police chief was appointed by the former Mayor Howard. Take it from there. The city took the chiefs job out of Civil Service so the mayors have the power to appoint the chief of their choosing. I regards to the big assault vehicle, I feel it was given to some other law enforcement agency as the Sheriff's dept didn't have authority to use it. The late sheriff got all his weaponry from the govt as he was very political in getting grants. I don't know if ever saw the command center vehicle for the sheriff's dept, it cost over 1 mill and was never used. Big spender former sheriff. It is sad that all these shootings are taken place. I know the police are doing their best in what they have. It is when there is an arrest, the judges let them out. Just look at the case of the the fed judge that just ordered the state to pay for sex change of a convicted murderer doing life without parole. The country has gone down the tubes.

The Mayor is answering your call like a Mayor should. If you watch the news you will see if there is a shooting in BOSTON Tha Mayor will speak about it. Well Ya All cant bash the Mayor because he IS doing his job so everyone now will all have to Bash the Police Chief. The police have been responding to all calls very quickly.

Let's just hope things settle down. Seems to me most of the shootings have involved
people who knew each other. It's rather unsettling that the latest involved someone so young. I am happy for the new Teen Center and I hope kids can come together and enjoy the space and spend quality time there. But I also hope that trouble doesn't start to brew there and the wrong people show up and start trouble. I am hoping there will be adequate adult staff to oversee the operations. The center is in a really visible spot, and it would be nice to know the square won't be overrun with unruly teens. And I have nothing against teenagers. :)

It doesn't matter if these criminals know each other, it doesn't matter if they're "targeted" - you or I could be caught in the crossfire - that's the danger of drive by shootings...the teen center is a great idea, agree, let's hope the bad element doesn't end up there one night - that's what happened at the Holmes School dances...a great place for younger kids soured by the usual bad apples.

If we could place a bet, I would put money that within 3 months there will be violence at this teen center. Geez, do you think one gang won't want to control it and then another will take over? You can be sure that other surrounding town gangs will get involved, Lynn/Saugus, Boston, Lawrence/Lowell all will be fighting to get the illegal $ and the Govt will pay the bill to house the place. Good deal and great plan. Lets have some nominations for the next Mayor and if they could, lets have an opinion on how the police department needs to change. This Mayor is making no impact at all.

Sorry Don, but I disagree with you. How can you even say that "This Mayor is making no impact at all"? Where have you been? He has done a hell of a lot for this city in the short time that he has been in office. If you are referring to the shootings, the last time that I checked, it was not he who pulled the trigers. He's had safety meeting after safety meeting, something that half of the councilors don't even do in their own wards. He has hired new police officers. He walks the streets of his city, something our former mayor never did. That is very sad that you do not see what most others are seeing in our new mayor.

1) The sheriff still has the van. We have other cities in our county that uses it also. That's why it left. I saw it just last month on 93 north.
2) I do not give a poop that they knew each
other. I was told by an officer that they pulled four bullets out the fence. Houses are behind the fence.
3) Because the shooting was not random does not make me feel any better. When criminals get guns, we are all targets because they shoot like Mr. Magoo.
4) Carol. Our Mayor is not our police chief as well. He is our Mayor. We want to hear from a MPD rep who has experience. D`Arcgangelo is not shadowing Kinnon like you think. They are asking hard questions. You might not like the way he runs the charter school, but he knows what he is talking about before he opens his mouth. I do not care for him, but at least a few members on the council have the potato sack to stand up and ask questions. But people will not like that and start to treat them like Ms. Fallon.
6) Our next Police Chief needs to be hired frim the outside. We are a small city with big city problems. No one in that department has experience with big city problems like gangs.
Carol J. Merletti

Mr. Lightbody,
1) Cool. I am glad that the Sheriff's command unit is being used in other cities. But it's been two years since it last visited Malden. It would be nice to see it back again.
2) I do not care either if the shooters and their victims knew each other. I've said it over and over again, that innocent victims could have been hit. That is not comforting at all!
3) Did I not say that I would rather hear from our police chief when it comes to crime, and not just our mayor? Please re-read my post.
4) Yup. I never denied it, I do not agree with the way that Kinnon runs his school (or his ward), but quite frankly, I no longer give a damn about how he runs it. Thankfully, it no longer has any impact on me since I've no children in his school anymore. So please, get over it.
5) I do not care for him as a city councilor. If you do, that is a good thing. He is the only one who refuses to be a team player by agreeing to disagree with his council members. He grandstands at every single meeting. He is not nice. He talks down to every single person who disagrees with him. Quite frankly, in my opinion, he is Malden's biggest bully.
6) I do not care if the police chief is from the inside or outside, I just what to know where the hell he is. I do not agree with you though. We have an outstanding police department with lots of officers who care and have experience with big city problems like gangs.

Why would the teen center become the new mecca for gangs? If the YMCA isn't, why the teen center? You honestly think just kids will run the program with no adult supervision? Why not the bowling allies?
Myself and my family have worked with kids our whole lives. They can teach these adults a thing or five about what really is happening in the schools that Mr. Brown tries so hard to hide.

I have heard that the Y has lots of violent gang members playing ball. Lots of people have left the Y because of it. There is some very strange type of denial coming from people these days or are they naive? Probably both. If the police are that short staffed, maybe a drastic action like putting national guard patrols on the streets. If shooting after shooting keeps occurring, is there a choice? Malden's Police Chief's James Holland and Police Commissioner Butch Gennetti needs to go. They may be decent, hardworking individuals but they are miserable failures in successfully addressing the crime issue.
The buck stops with them and they need to take responsibility and resign or be fired.

the reason we have cops is that the bad peoples parents have already failed. The perps are not minors, they cant be parented anymore. It 's the job of the police force to protect the citizens from these dirtbags. I don't blame the patrolman. The blame goes to failed strategies and execution by the higher ups. Low priced rental units, hotels filled with sect 8 - these people haven o roots here. Its one thing to help those in need and provide some shelter, but not to a good idea to turn all of Malden's hotels/motels into temp state housing (more like permanent).
I am all for raising the rents in Malden, It should be affordable to all who work for living and the elderly. But to have so much government paid and low rent real estate is not good for anyone. not for home owners and not for the people that live there as evidenced by the rising crime

It's good for the absentee landlords - check gets mailed right to their home! They don't have to do a thing to their properties to make them remotely presentable, easy money lining their pockets, their tenants get away with all sorts of things and no one cares...what's better than that? Easy money for them, painful taxes taken out of us to pay for their housing, food, medical care...I'll never forget my daughter's first paycheck...she make 100.00 and thought she would be getting 100.00 -haha what a case! Then I told her what each tax was for...I explained that the stocked treats in half her friend's houses were paid for by us and now she would be paying for that as well - that was always a thorn in my side when my kids came home complaining their friends always had tons of food, drinks and snacks...I told them try paying cash for these items...not happening in this house where snacks were bought once a week, and don't eat them all at once.

I have been in Malden for a little over six years now, and I am so shocked by all of the violence that has gone on since moving here. I checked Malden out before I bought my house, because I did not want to move into a city and be stuck in the middle of what I ended up being stuck in. Don't get me wrong, I still love Malden but what is really going on? I do believe that things like this is happening in many other cities, but this is getting crazy. A shooting here, a robbery there! It seems as if things are getting closer and closer. Is there a "bad" part of Malden that I should try to avoid or something? I go on jogs and I walk my dog at night, but I am really starting to get nervous about going out after dark. I do not believe that these are random shootings, and this can't be something new. I think that this has been going on for a very long time, and someone has been doing a really good job of hiding things. I agree with Mr. lightbody about not feeling better about the shooting not being random. You are so right; when these criminals get a hold of these guns, we are all victims in one way or another. We may end up being the unintended target. I am sick to my stomach hearing about all of these senseless crimes going on especially when they involve our youth. I hope that everything goes well with the new teen center, but isn't there something else that we can do for the teens? Can't there be funds put towards Malden sports or something?

They should have a grid of a few blocks and inspect them based on that schedule. It would only take a few weeks to cover the entire city.

This Mayor has his eyes on a bigger position and is not focused on the city. You talked to the Mayor twice and now you trust him? Your name is on an auditorium seat and you think your opinion is greater then mine? Remember who has the seat next to you. A crooked sheriff that taught this mayor how to handle the public.
