Couple Safe After Being Trapped in Car
Emergency crews responded to an elderly couple stuck in rising floodwater near the Malden/Melrose line during Wednesday's storm.
An unidentified couple is safe after their vehicle became trapped in rapidly rising flood water Wednesday afternoon.
City police, firefighters and public works employees responded to the call near 700 Broadway around 2 p.m., which closed lanes of traffic both to and from nearby Route 1.
An officer at the scene said the water reached about halfway up the small car's door at its height, though it had subsided heavily by the road's 3 p.m. re-opening.
The vehicle was towed from the scene with no reported injuries.
A second vehicle was at the scene, though it was unclear if it's inhabitants were stuck in the flood. A spokesperson for the Malden Police Department wasn't immediately available.
The National Weather Service advises motorists to avoid flooded areas at highway dips, bridges and other low areas, which can be deeper - and have stronger currents - than they appear.
