City Seeks Street Performers for Pilot Program

What do you think about the plan to bring some performing arts downtown?

Are you a musician, acrobat, living statue or magician?

City Hall is looking for professional street performers of all stripes to bring foot traffic downtown on Friday and Saturday nights, and are accepting applications to audition for the volunteer gig.

While there is no pay, performers will be permitted to accept tips from their audience and "offer for sale performance-originated products" only.

Artists must also adhere to a number of regulations and apply for a permit from the city.

Those interested can download the application and email it to Kevin Duffy at kduffy@cityofmalden.org.

Performers can also call Duffy with questions at 781-397-7000 ext. 2009.

I love this! This is the kind of application of the Broken Windows Theory of urban renewal and crime reduction that we need to invest in more of. It's hard for those who have negative intentions to hang out in an area where people gather for street theater, street art, farmer's markets, etc. :)

Agreed -- street performers will bring some great energy to the downtown, but the Great Wall of Malden will ensure the benefits are minimized. People need to see into the square from Malden Station and the street needs to become a thruway so drivers (myself included) stop avoiding it. I volunteer to help with any teardown / rebuilding efforts...

:) We saw you audition, Eric. Amelie thought you were cool.

Also, after tonight, is there a set schedule from this point forward or just...when performers are out, they're out?
