City: 'Place-Holders' for Parking Will Be Thrown Out Tuesday
If you are using chairs, cones or other objects to save your shoveled-out parking spot, get them out ASAP - trash collectors will start disposing of them Tuesday morning.
Residents take note: as trash collection begins after the Monday holiday, collectors will begin targeting stray objects left as street-parking placeholders Tuesday morning.
While the practice has no legal basis, most neighborhoods have informal rules about saving parking spaces after a major snow incident.
The City of Malden Facebook page reported the development Monday night.
"Calling all chairs, tires, cones, ironing boards etc," the announcement reads. "This week we will be removing all parking space savers as they are prohibited in our city.
"They will be treated as trash and thrown away so if you care about them, don't put them out tomorrow morning."

Nothing would make me happier than to see my inconsiderate neighbor who never shovels and never moves his car when he is supposed to have his place holder taken away,

This would be a great way of getting rid of things that we normally have to pay to throw out. Just put it in an empty parking space!

Cole (love the name by the way)!
That is ‘BRILLIANT”!
Considering the new breed of trash guys are normally very selective about what they will and will not pick up!

Good move by the city. It's been 10 days since the storm - that's too long to "claim" a space. In Boston they collect the space holders about 48 hours after a storm. I can understand wanting to preserve a space after shoveling it out but there needs to be a reasonable time limit. I have seen many people mark their territory until everything is melted and that is just wrong. I hope the city adopts this policy after every storm and does it sooner.

Well, to be fair, they collect the placeholders 48 hours after a snow emergency is lifted.

I just hope the city actually does it. They said they would tow the cars that didnt comply with the snow emergency during the blizzard and not one car on my street was plowed.

I do think a smarter approach, for the next storm, would be to:
1. If you declare a snow emergency, tow cars that are illegally parked, so plowing efforts can proceed effectively.
2. Plow on the sides of the street where parking is permitted, so there is no loss of parking spaces.
3. Then, enforce the non-space-saver rule. It won't be as big of an issue when there is not the dramatic loss of available that we saw after Nemo.

I meant to say, "dramatic loss of available parking"

Oh well I think the city need to clean up the snow from the street and side walks, they also need to apply these rules to them self

well, i didn't put my spaceholder out today, and as I sit at work I'm just told that there is no place to park on my street. Other people on my street that apparently do not follow Malden Patch put theirs out, they did not get thrown away. so much for following the rules. but I'm not complaining, just making an observation. There are worse things in life than having to walk to your house from the next street over.
