I agree. This project was totally unnecessary, since there are 2 stations already close by. I don't see how you can get anymore people onto these trains at rush hour.

I think the development in Assembly Square is great for the area and surrounding areas but I don't see how another station will work. i watch Sullivan Square and even Wellington Square 8AM commuters constantly having to wait for the next train because there is no space on the current one. I know additional tracks along the line would have been more expensive but it might have been a better solution to the already huge capacity problem going on. Maybe another track for express trains during rush hour? Maybe add a stop on the commuter rail instead to use it as an express MBTA line? I don't know but all I can say is if you're a 9-5er good luck getting on the train in the morning assemble squarers!

I agree with Liana's idea about the express train. I recently wrote to the T about using the third track between Community College and Wellington for express trains in the evening commute northbound. So far no response. I also suggested to T management about getting free access to the Commuter Rail during times that the Orange Line was out of service. Before the T went to the Charlie Card and Ticket system, the old passes were valid on the Commuter rail from North Station to Malden Center.

I will admit that I have on occassion taken the train from Malden to Oak Grove for the purpose of doing just that, getting a seat because Malden was that packed.

My heart says no. My bank account breathes a sigh of relief. But I don't think that IKEA did pull out of the deal...yet. The NIMBYs in The 'Ville got all hot and bothered about increased traffic (because, as the Stoughton store proved, traffic will be gridlocked forever more with everyone rushing to get their cheap, import goods...and that was sarcasm, yes...) and that's what's held the project up for so long. IKEA proposed the store location T stop to allow more people to take the T - and are paying for the stop. Last I heard, if you took the T to IKEA, you also got free delivery of your larger goods.

Now, as for the "Somerville Project People" beating a path to Malden's door as noted by someone else above...are you kidding me? When was the last time you were IN Somerville? 'Villie-ans give me pitying looks when I say I live in Malden, but no one ever seems to be in a hurry to leave there for here. It would be great if Malden could someday be that tempting, but for now...Do try to bring yourself into this century please.

Beth, I'd heard that about Stoughton as well. The first month or two was chaos but...IKEA! :) The closest one heretofore was in NJ and, well...NJ. :( I do know that everytime I've gone (and we're going again this Friday for some things for the daughter's room), it's been so easy in and out.

I mean, I see the concern with respect to increased traffic in an already ridiculously over-trafficked area like Assembly Square, but IKEA really did sort of bend over backwards to accomodate those without cars - and make it more feasible to take the T in the first place. Free delivery and not having to drive? Yes please.
