Armed Robbery Reported at Salem St. Gas Station
Multiple sources are reporting a man showed a gun at the Pro Tech Gas Station at 206 Salem St. and reportedly fled toward Clark St.
An armed robbery was reported to police just after 7 p.m. Monday night at the Salem St. Pro Tech Gas station, according to scanner transmissions.
The suspect was described as a black male, 30-35 years of age, 5'8", with a stocky build, wearing dark sunglasses, a black jacket and a black hat. He also reportedly sported a light goatee.
The reporting party said the man brandished a black gun and reportedly fled on foot down Salem St. toward Clark St.
Anyone with information about the suspect should call 911.
The above is not official information from the Malden Police Department and has been obtained through public police scanner transmissions.
More official information to come as it becomes available.

Perhaps a condition of new commercial buildings being put up in the city or licenses being granted to businesses can be some sort of security or at the very least security cameras. Also, do we really need a variety store down by Papa Gino's on Rte 60 or another strip mall in that area? The traffic down there is bad now and it's only going to get worse. I heard a car went into a building in that area today.

Maya, I moved here sixteen years ago and it was nothing like Dorchester or Chelsea. It was a diverse community where believe it or not I used to go out and leave my doors unlocked! It certainly wasn't Lynnfield, but it wasn't like this. I personally do think it is turning into Dorchester and I am not willing to wait until it totally turns into Chelsea (although I don't think we are far from that either). I am not sure what the answer is, but with each day it gets worse and worse and more scary to live here. And for the person who is chomping at the bit to ask why I don't just leave, I will answer you before you ask the question -- IF I COULD I WOULD!

I find it interesting that every time something happens in Malden some residents are so quick to say "it's turning into Dorchester/Chelsea/Roxbury/[enter any transitional neighborhood here]". Malden DOES have a lot to offer it's residents and for anyone that has been in Malden long enough, as I have, you know that it bounces back. Every densely populated city has crime. I invite anyone saying that Malden is as bad as Dorchester to spend a night at the Franklin Field development then tell me how bad Malden is. The truth is that any community can flourish as long as it works as a community. It's time for neighbors to start talking to one another again.

I apolgize for removing my orginal post about population density which was posted before the above entry from A Malden Resident, but I had too many errors previously.
Sure if we would all start talking to one another and further get to know many more people generally it would help increase the chances of anything we want to get done in this city. We often say this but how can we do it? I point out the population density because it's important to understand that Malden, as are the other neighboring cities nearby some of the most populated Urban areas in the country. Knowing how many Malden Police are their per square mile in important to know so that we can see compare those numbers to cites with similar population density numbers. If we can get some numbers on the crime rates in those cities and compared how many policemen they have employed per sq. mile, it gives us a starting point of discussion. It's only one concept and I'm sure there are many more out there. I'm saying lets get some facts and then some more facts and then hopefully better ideas. Doesn't popuation density add confusion to a crime scene? Don't the physical placement of many pieces of real estate to one another, make it harder to find a perpetrator after he/she has committed a crime? Doesn't the fact we have over 11,000 people living in each of our 5 sq. miles make us less apt, to know one another. We need a more comprehensive system to fight crime that is better suited than the one we have now.
Leonardo DaVinci
9:10 am on Tuesday, February 5, 2013
Boston is the 51st. most densly populated city in the US with 13, 321 people per sq. mile. Everett our next door neighbor is in 93rd. place with 11, 241 people per sq. mile, but Malden is in 98th place with 11, 173 peope per sq. mile. Somerville, Chelsea and Cambridge are all more densly populated than Boston coming in 17, 30, and 26 respectively out of the 100 most densly populated cities in America.
I guess having 55,000 plus people within our 5 sq. miles just adds to the crime problem, but I wanted to point out that Malden has an extreme number of people, within our borders that make controlling crime very difficult without a change in the way we do things. How do we compare with other densly populated cities as to the number of policemen we have per sq. mile? It would be wise to look into these numbers as we have other cities nearby to compare the numbers with. If someone has that number please share it with us. We need creative ideas to stem the tide of crimes in this city assuming that the population density is making crimes easier to committ without being caught. I've heard some ideas on the subject on Malden Patch, but please refrain from ripping these ideas unless you have a better one. I feel that we need to have another system in place besides just the Malden Police to handle everything especially if their numbers are too low, because they can only be in so many places at once. Any ideas based on these numbers from anyone probably would be appreciated.

We put our house up for sale after 45 years in Malden. As seniors we don't feel safe here anymore. Our children did not even want to keep their childhood home, they said sell it and get out. It is very upsetting to see the city spiral downward such as it is. Something needs to be done because even the long term residents like myself are starting to sell.

Very few people I went to high school with have stayed in Malden. Others are actively planning on moving this spring. When it was gang on gang violence, it didn't seem to bother people much, but every other weeks is a robbery or a shooting, stand outside at night and all you hear is police sirens, and with the latest murder of a business owner, in the middle of the day, ON MAIN STREET, how can anyone feel safe. What a wonderful legacy Mayor Howard has left us, lets hope he can help Winchester as much as he did Malden.

Chief Wiggumss retiring very soon. Are there already plans for his replacement, Has there been a search nationwide for someone with experience in dealing with the type of crime wave this city is going through, or is the mayor just going to promote someone from inside, and keep the status quo?
You have to wonder, what is the current chief's qualifications. Does not seem to have any. Has he been going to training to learn the latest law enforcement technologies and strategies? Does he keep up to date on how other cities are dealing with this. Does he have plan (or clue?) How successful was he in fighting crime prior to becoming police chief in Malden? Can someone explain how he even still has the job. Come on chief, what the game plan. How are you going to send a message to the "playahs" in Malden their time is done...

I know that he is not performing the job. Other than that I don't know much. Does the job require a graduate degree in law enforcement? Or at least a bachelors with grad work highly desirable.
Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or a closely related field. In lieu of a bachelors degree the following experience will be deemed eligible for consideration:
Twelve (12) years of experience in police work as a certified officer with a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience at a lieutenant or higher level within a similar or larger-sized department.
Preference will be given to those candidates having completed on-going law enforcement or related training either within an established college degree program or through law enforcement training schools,
I like this one - Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; considerable knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations;
Thorough knowledge of modern management and leadership principles
Ability to meet and maintain a level of fitness consistent with the Department's physical fitness standards, from the picture of him sleeping in the chair in the safety meeting store I seriously doubt he meets this standard)

It starts at the top. The chief does not care so the officers don't care or their hands are tied. This force has a terrible reputation. People try but get no response so they stop trying. And before you jump down my throat we do have some fine officers.
The crime numbers have been fudged so long nobody knows which way is up.
Start small stand in front of the schools and start tagging. You see it everyday double parked, bus stops and no parking zones are filled with parents who don't think they have to abide by the law and we wonder why the kids have the same attitude. Is this news story really the place for what appears to be immature squabbling? I'm not sure how or why a story about an armed robbery turned into a place to talk about alcohol and drug use, but maybe I'm not familiar enough with the guidelines of this web site.

Neither do I Frank. I have no idea how I turned into this 'lowlife' according to Mr. Twelve Step. I guess being a member of A.A. has a prerequisite of being angry. But I'll be sure and tell my girlfriend to 'just pull the plug' on herself, so that Stalin can solve his tax dollar dilemma. Where do these people come from?
