Mayor: Breaking and Entering Calls Down

Mayor Christenson says breaking and entering calls are down 75 percent from the spike earlier this month.

Home burglaries are markedly down after a string of breaking and entering calls prompted the city to issue a Code RED Alert to residents last week, advising them of the spike and urging them to take precautions.

Mayor Gary Christenson said that he was “very happy to report” the number of house breaks from two weeks ago dropped from 20 to five.

“Hats off to the Malden police department, as well as residents who have been working to give us information we need,” he said.

Christenson made the remarks during a press conference announcing a task force to determine “the best practices for the upkeep of Malden's school buildings.”

I got involved yesterday when I saw two men going around my Neighborhood in a pick up truck and knocking randomly on people's back doors. I told myself if they were still around when I came back from running my errands, that I would call it in. Upon my return I spotted them again, and I decided to confront them and ask them what they were doing. They were extremely evasive and couldn't come up with a reasonable explanation, so I took down the plate no. and called it in to the Malden Police Dept. I must say, I was very happy that they did not just blow it off like I thought they might do. As it turns out, the person who came back as the owner the vehicle was no stranger to the MPD. With that being said, thank you MPD!! You Rock!

Thank you. These guys were on Russell St., then Whitman, and when I confronted them they were on Watts St. heading towards Townsend St. Sometimes, I think I may be too "Vigilante," for my own good.. I actually directed traffic today at a Motor Vehicle Accident on Highland Ave. until the MPD arrived!! lol! I think you give me too much credit though. I just do what my gut tells me to do, when I see someone who happens to be in need. I simply don't see it as anything more than I would expect someone else to do for me, if I were in the situation, but thank you. :)

You should never confront anyone and put yourself in danger. I do admire your spunk though.

I totally understand that, and while I do respect it, I absolutely would not put myself in a dangerous situation that I felt I could not handle. ;)

Strange thing happened to me last night..About 6:45PM there was a knock on my door(I do have a door bell), I thought it was one of my neighbors, they usually just knock. When I opened the door there was this guy in his 20s wanting to clean my rugs for free, his company was in the area and it was a promotion. He told me he was a struggling college student and needed the work. I gladly took his flier and told him that I might be interested in the spring. He said "Oh noooo it had to be done now, tonight..Of course I declined and he took his flier back. I called the MPD reporting this stranger, gave a discription but heard nothing about it..Has anyone else come across this kind of "promotion."

Toni:

This looks and sounds very shady and suspicious. It could be one of those fly-by-night businesses, or something more sinister, like would-be criminals canvassing neighborhoods or homes to commit burglaries. It's just a sad indication of our times, but we need to take all the precautions necessary and never trust strangers that arouse our suspicion.

It's funny you say they did not use your bell or your front door, because that's the same thing the guy that I confronted was doing. It actually sounds like him/them. I think they are definately "canvassing," the Neighborhood. What area was he in? If your description is the same one that I gave the Police, I know that they are aware of who he is, and they will definately be keeping an eye out, especially now that you have called as well. :)

That's exactly what I thought too, someone canvassing homes. What the guy didn't know was, I have a security camera and he could easily be identified.

That's great, Toni. Keep that footage. For some reason I don't think these guys are going away that easily. I do know the name of the man who I called in on, but I cannot release that information. Please keep anything metal out of sight.. That's all I can say. ;)

Paul, that's a good question. I suppose I should have called it in earlier, but I thought the guy might be with National Grid at first, because he had a reflective vest on (at first), and there was a National Grid truck on the corner, so I didn't want to call the Police out for nothing and be a "bother," to them as I described earlier. As soon as I realized he was definately not with National Grid, I confronted him/them, and when they couldn't give me a reasonable explanation, I called it in to the MPD. I was very happy to see they took it seriously. I know I made it seem like there was a big time lapse before I called it in, but there were many different factors that went into my decision. My errand was just around the corner, and I also needed to drop my Daughter off before I started asking questions and taking down plate numbers.

Deanna, the guy was in his twenties with dark brown hair it looked like he had his hair cut with a little bangs in the front. He was wearing a dark blue jacket, no identification card on him. The fliers he had looked like they were homemade on the computer, there was no vehicle that I was aware of. This happened in the Linden section.

Thanks. Toni. I don't know that it's the same guy. The one I confronted had another man with him in a pick up truck , but good for you for calling it in!! ;)

Enrique, ask the MPD how intelligent and tough I am. Seems like the only thing your worried about is the bar scene. Fortunately for those business owners they are not the ones being held up and robbed. But you keep having good time drinking.

Chris. Your right. I don't dislike you as a person, I don't even know you. What I don't like is how you get caught up in the numbers that you read and take them as gospel.
We will just agree to disagree on the numbers and leave it at that. Let it be known thought that there is nothing I wouldn't do as a citizen of Malden to help my neighbors and fellow citizens. I have proven this time and time again.

Aaron.... If you have paid attention to recent reports from around the ciity and surrounding areas this is a common practice of entering a home for the current scumb bags that like to break into peoples houses. I'm glad you can make fun of it. Tell that to the people who have been victimzed by it.
