Bike to the Sea Closer to Reality

City officials kick off new construction on the $635,000 bike path with a ribbon cutting.

City officials and volunteers gathered near the intersection of Medford and Canal Street Thursday morning to commemorate the start of the “Bike to the Sea” trail, a three mile bike path extending from Linden Sq. to the Everett city line.

The path will be constructed along an abandoned MBTA rail corridor and will be closed to motorized traffic, except for emergency and maintenance vehicles.

Plans call for a path about twelve feet in width, with a hard, packed surface.

The city will spend about $500,000 for construction, with the city council earmarking projected meals tax revenues for the project.

The state will use an additional $135,000 in state chapter 90 funds to subsidize the final cost.

“This long-awaited project will be a welcome addition to the various recreational activities and offerings in the city,” Malden Mayor Richard Howard said.

Construction will likely finish sometime next summer, though it is unclear when the trail will be opened for public use.

More pictures of the path were visible on the group's Facebook page. Readers can also check out a map of the proposed multi-city trail.
