A two-alarm fire near Mystic Valley School sent smoke billowing and prompted an evacuation, according to a letter sent home to parents.

All residents were able to safely flee the second-floor fire at 740 Salem St. fire safely, according to scanner reports.

Seven adults and one child were provided temporary housing, clothing and food by the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts.

State investigators continue to examine the cause of the fire, which the Boston Globe reports took about an hour to extinguish.

Dry conditions in the city have had firefighters respond to a number of brush fires in the area, Asst. Fire Chief Jack Colangeli said.

They were also related to a blaze on Adams St. earlier this month

We can thank the X Mayor of Malden for laying off our Firefighter and closing Maplewood instead of fixing it!! Great Job to the Malden Fireman and women, plus the surrounding City's :)

My husband made this exact remark as we were watching the smoke and flames from our own home down the street and noting that rush hour is a terrible time to have to deal with such a thing!

We can thank Councilor Kinnon for allowing that building to fall into such disrepair the building was condemned. More important to muzzle one breed of dog than to worry about the safety of Ward 6 residents I guess. Thank you to our fire fighters for their response regardless of where they are now housed.

Maybe it's time for the ward 6 councilor to have another safety meeting. To let his contituents now what he is doing to get adequate fire protection back in the ward he represents!

Thank God this fire did not occur when the school was letting out....The fire trucks would not have been able to get anywhere near this house.
