The new softball field at Pine Banks Park, originally scheduled to open on April 30, will have a soft opening on Saturday, April 20 for the Mayor's Cup series of games pitting Melrose teams agains Malden teams.

The Melrose Lady Raiders and Malden Golden Tornadoes will face off at 11 a.m., Melrose Mayor Rob Dolan said.

A grand opening ceremony is still scheduled at the new field for April 30.

Melrose and Malden split the cost of the new Pine Banks Park softball field and track facility, which is scheduled to open in the fall.

The new fields were part of Melrose's $5.5 million athletic fields project that included the new Fred Green Field and new Morelli Field.
