The Malden Reads committee gave a presentation to the Malden School Committee on December 10th to kick off a new year of the program in the Malden schools beginning in 2013. The popular “One City, One Book” program is community-wide but offers a special K-12 school-based component. Beebe School students Liam Schwab and Jacob Pettigrew, along with Malden Reads committee member Ose Schwab, did the presentation in a lively question & answer format. Each member of the Malden School Committee received copies of the main book selection “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, as well as the three K-8 companion book selections, “How Chipmunk Got His Stripes” (Grades K-3), “Eagle Song” (Grades 4-6), and “Heart of a Chief” (Grades 7-8), all by author Joseph Bruchac. Programs in the schools will be carried out by the school librarians and electively carried out by classroom teachers. Malden Reads provides the schools with copies of the books, curriculum ideas, and support materials. For more information about Malden Reads, please visit www.maldenreads.org.
